In 1968, a groundbreaking television documentary titled Black on Black aired in Los Angeles. Created by journalism professor Joe Saltzman, the program took a different approach from most media of its time. Rather than using an outside narrator to interpret events, the film centered the voices of Black residents in South Central Los Angeles, allowing them to speak directly about their lives, experiences, and perspectives.

The documentary captures conversations about identity, community life, economic struggle, policing, culture, family dynamics, and faith during a period of major social change in the United States. Filmed in the late 1960s — just years after major civil rights legislation and during a time of heightened national tension — Black on Black serves as a raw, unfiltered snapshot of how ordinary people described their reality in that moment.

In this episode, we Link Up with Dr. Monique Swift Muhammad, a licensed counselor, with over thirty years of clinical mental health experience and the current president of the Association of Black Psychologists. Dr. Muhammad takes us through her upbringing in Staten Island, experiencing anti-Black racism, the refuge of Black community, and the transformation that came through Black Studies at Rutgers University. We discuss the influence of her professors, her journey into psychology, and the work that eventually brought her into leadership within the Association of Black Psychologists. She also shares her experiences traveling throughout Abibiman (The Black Land), from her first Sankɔfa Journey to Ghana, and various other locations.

The conversation moves deeper into Black psychology, the psychological consequences of operating within foreign cultural systems, and why true healing requires reconnecting with who we are as Black people. We discuss the importance of Black-controlled spaces, the relationship between Black consciousness in the diaspora and cultural foundations in Abibiman, and the need to bring these together through organized international work, including the Decade of Our Repatriation (D.O.O.R.) initiative. Dr. Muhammad also shares her vision for strengthening the Association of Black Psychologists, the opportunities and dangers of technology and artificial intelligence, and why Black liberation must move beyond intellectual understanding to a deeper reconnection with spirit, ancestors, and collective Black purpose.

This is a conversation about Black psychology, Sankɔfa Journey, healing, spirit, Black Power, repatriation, and the work required to restore the Black mind, reconnect the Black world, and build institutions capable of advancing Abibifahodie (Black Liberation).

⁣What does the new A Different World get wrong about Black culture and political thought?
Dr. Talawa Adodo, a scholar of Africana Studies, examines the new A Different World series, comparing it to the original and its representation of Black identity, cultural consciousness, and political ideologies.

Dr. Adodo argues that the original series, particularly during the Debbie Allen era, explored a broader spectrum of Black political thought, including Pan-Africanism, Afrocentrism, Black nationalism, integration, and the struggle against systemic oppression.
While acknowledging some improvements in the new series, he questions its limited engagement with African-centered perspectives and its emphasis on contemporary liberal politics. He also examines how changes in Black political and cultural discourse have influenced the stories being told on television today.
