CONCERNING VIOLENCE, the new Lauryn Hill-narrated documentary on colonialism and the impact of exploitation around the world, is shared with the trailer and explanation from director, Göran Olsson. After making the Black Power Mixtape, Olsson's latest film is seen here, at the Sheffield Doc Festival episode of BYOD.

Concerning Violence is a 2014 Swedish documentary film written and directed by Göran Olsson. American singer and actress Lauryn Hill served as the narrator of the film. The film premiered in-competition in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at 2014 Sundance Film Festival on January 17, 2014. In May 2013, Films Boutique acquired the world-wide distribution rights of the film.
The film also premiered at 64th Berlin International Film Festival in Panorama Dokumente section, in February 2014. It won a prize at the festival. The film also premiered in competition at 2014 Göteborg International Film Festival on January 30, 2014.
Göran Hugo Olsson returns to the Sundance Film Festival (The Black Power Mixtape 1967--1975 played in the World Cinema Documentary Competition in 2011) with this bold, fresh, and compelling visual narrative about the African liberation struggles of the 1960s and 1970s.Concerning Violence combines newly discovered archival material depicting some of the most daring moments in the confrontation with colonial power, accompanied by singer Lauryn Hill's searing narrative and drawn from psychologist/philosopher Frantz Fanon's seminal anticolonial text, The Wretched of the Earth.
In this potent, arresting, and surprisingly emotional film, Olsson artfully elucidates Fanon's psychiatric and psychological analysis of the dehumanizing effects of colonization on the individual and the nation. Concerning Violence makes accessible Fanon's theory that the violence of colonialism must be met with greater violence to be defeated, as well as his vision and plea to reject the lust for colonial power and instead embrace a more creative and humane society. As a result, Olsson's powerful documentary makes an accurate, timely, and vital contribution toward building a better world for the future.
Göran Hugo Olsson's previous film at the Sundance Film Festival, The Black Power Mixtape 1967--1975, won the 2011 Documentary Editing Award and became a huge hit in festivals and theatres and on television throughout the world. Prior films include Am I Black Enough for You (2009) with the artist Billy Paul. Since 1999, Olsson has been a member of the editorial board of Ikon South Africa, a platform for creative documentaries by township filmmakers in South Africa in cooperation with the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

It is time. Amidst all that is happening in the world today Afrikan=Black people across the globe, especially Afrika cannot act nonchalant, unaware, and ignorant. Afrikan=Black people; no one will do it for us. We must do it for ourselves. No one will treat us better until we treat ourselves better. It is time to show those who commit genocide against us that we will deal with them squarely—be it physically or spiritually. They will not stop shooting at us until we shoot back. They will keep poisoning us in the name of vaccines and healthcare until we practice our own indigenous healthcare. They will not stop looting our continent until we kick them out. They will not stop teaching us how to be obedient slaves until we start to educate ourselves.
Thanks to brother George Floyd, our brothers and sisters in the diaspora have risen and are demonstrating in thousands regardless of COVID-19 over his gruesome murder and that of many thousands gone due to incessant lynching of Afrikan=Black people in amerikkka in broad daylight by police officers and private citizens. The question is how long are we going to march?
The problems of Afrikans=Black people anywhere in the world is a problem for Afrikans=Black people everywhere in the world. While Continental Afrikans=Black people are being beaten mercilessly in China and are being stigmatized as being the carriers of COVID-19, anti-Afrikan misleaders were mute. As imAxw Ptahhotep rightfully said ‘He who listens to his belly belongs to the enemy.’ Continental Afrikans=Black people are being slaughtered while having their organs harvested in countries of North Afrika criminally occupied by arab terrorists but we just look on.
Until Afrika becomes a super power that can have Afrikan=Black people’s back throughout the world, this menace may be far from ending.
