Sarah Vaughan:
Sarah Vaughan was an exceptionally talented jazz vocalist known for her rich, expressive voice and impressive vocal range.Nicknamed "Sassy" and "The Divine One," Vaughan was celebrated for her mastery of both jazz and popular music.Her recordings, including "Misty" and "Lullaby of Birdland," showcase her remarkable vocal technique and emotional depth, solidifying her status as one of the greatest jazz singers of all time.

Marian Anderson:
Marian Anderson was a groundbreaking African American contralto who achieved international acclaim as one of the most distinguished classical singers of the 20th century.Despite facing racial discrimination, Anderson's talent and perseverance led her to become the first African American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.She is perhaps best known for her historic concert at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939, after being denied permission to perform at the Daughters of the American Revolution's Constitution Hall, where she sang for an integrated audience of 75,000 people.

For too long, the history of Ancient Egypt has been written by others outside of Africa. Onuora Abuah, travels the length of Egypt, along the Nile, to establish just how much Egyptian culture owes to the mother continent it sits in.

Nigeria grows 63 million metric tons of cassava (also known as yuca or manioc) every year, but most of the country's supply is eaten locally as fufu or garri. Experts say Nigeria could be missing out on billions in exports of lucrative cassava products like bubble tea pearls, starch, or ethanol. Challenges along the country's entire supply chain have caused hundreds of millions of dollars in cassava spoilage. But one entrepreneur, Yemisi Iranloye, thinks she has the solution. She's introduced higher-yielding seed varieties and moved processing plants closer to farms. Now, her farmers earn four times more for their product, and her cassava starch and sorbitol have landed her clients like Nestle and Unilever. Could Yemisi's model be the way for Nigeria to feed itself and cash in on exports?

In 2021, Ghana grew 1 million tons of cocoa. But it exported most of that to Europe and North America, where it was turned into chocolate. And the big bucks are in chocolate. Trapped in a trade relationship with Europe and struggling to process chocolate itself, Ghana sees little of the industry's profits. So as chocolate companies rake in billions, cocoa farmers struggle to make a living income. We went to Ghana to see the impact on farmers and learn how local entrepreneurs are trying to keep chocolate dollars inside their country.

As _Democracy Now!_ broadcasts from COP28 in Dubai, we look at how the United Arab Emirates is using its vast oil money to buy up the rights to land in many African countries in order to sell carbon credits to major polluters, a plan that critics characterize as a new form of colonialism. "After failing to mitigate at the source," wealthy polluters now "want to, basically, buy, on the cheap, African land," says Power Shift Africa's Mohamed Adow about wealthy nations' failure to deliver on climate finance and turn to a "land grab" on the African continent. "What they're doing is actually commodifying nature," says Adow, who describes carbon credits as an "imaginary concept" amounting to "permits to pollute."
