Zanzibar -- The Dark Side of Paradise is a twenty minute news documentary which looks at the causes and consequences of the longest blackout in history. The film assesses how unremitting power problems in the Spice Islands are putting their fragile economy at great risk, whilst also denying their impoverished population a safe water supply. It also provides a background of Zanzibar's current political situation and their dependence on tourism in order to illustrate why the power cuts are only serving to aggravate an already dire situation.

This is the story of an inspiring Maasai man who has brought positive change to his land and community through permaculture. Joseph Lentunyoi started a permaculture center in his dry, arid homeland of Laikipia County 7 years ago where he showcases sustainable food systems following permaculture design principles, land regeneration practices, and other simple solutions that can improve livelihoods (solar, biogas, natural building techniques, etc.). Laikipia Permaculture Center -- the organization he founded -- also helped create business opportunities for women, including making cosmetics from Aloe and many different products from a locally growing cactus.

THE NOMMO SESSIONS

NOMMO is the, monthly interactive session for the Afrikan community, presented by the Alkebu-Lan Revivalist Movement. On the last Friday of every month, you can rap, reason and re-energise with like-minded Sisters and Brothers through film, music and the spoken word in its many forms.

Dr Hastings Banda is one of the most underrated African dictators. During His 33 year rule, the country experienced the worst human rights violations and paternalistic control of the Malawians.

He controlled every aspect of their lives, treating his people as children and addressing his ministers as my boys

He banned televisions, beards, dreadlocks and long hair among men. Any sort of political dissent was ruthlessly dealt with through his secret police and Militia.

Though he never had children, he relied on the support of his official hostess and former secretary Cecilia Kadzamira and Kadzamira's uncle John Tembo, who saw themselves as his successors when he left power.

He is remembered on the continent as the only leader who maintained ties with the Apartheid South Africa and Portuguese regimes; backed Nixon in Vietnam and refused to support an armed struggle against the Ian Smith regime in Southern Rhodesia.
