Following on from the multiple award-winning "Limits of Perception" and "Time Limits", this is the third and final part of the trilogy of films that explores the limits of our everyday perceptions and beyond, showing that the world is a far more remarkable place than most of us ever realise. Humans are visual creatures -- sight is our main sense. Yet our eyes often deceive us in peculiar ways. There is far more to light than meets the eye. This fascinating documentary explores the human's visible spectrum of light and ventures even further into territories we cannot sense by ourselves without technical equipment: from coloured light to gamma rays, that could destroy all life on Earth, as well as radio waves, without which our modern society would be impossible. The film also follows the great pioneers, from Newton and Einstein, to Herschel and Roentgen, whose genius uncovered the marvels of the electro-magnetic spectrum and took us far beyond the limits of light.

Recently, Lola Eniola-Adefeso and colleagues published a commentary in Cell describing the systemic inequities in research funding through the NIH, which have created a barrier to the success of Black scientists. By funding applications from Black investigators at approximately half the rate of similarly trained white investigators, the NIH has created a burden on Black scientists that leads some to abandon academia, and slows or blocks promotion of others, limiting their scientific achievement and career trajectory.

In this webinar, Eniola-Adefeso shares her personal journey through academia and the set of recommendations offered in the article for NIH policies to eliminate the funding disparity, as well as action items for fellow scientists, the private sector, and academia to overcome the racism that is endemic in the sciences.

Sewer systems are essential to modern plumbing. Every time you flush a toilet, use a sink, or take a shower, you create liquid waste of varying chemical makeups that has to be transported and treated. You could just flush it into a septic tank, but these tanks require maintenance and come with a host of other issues when integrated en masse for modern cities. We have to manage our waste because it stinks, it contains deadly bacteria, and it has dangerous chemicals that could affect the environment.

You probably know that wastewater gets treated at a wastewater treatment plant, but let's take a look at how it gets there: sewer systems.

We always have to keep in mind that a Documentary, after all, can tell lies and it can tell lies because it lays claim to a form of veracity which fiction doesn't. Some of the documentaries are made just to discredit some particular person, party, organization, system etc, but most of them here on TDF are non biased, without prejudice and worth watching.

ORFC Global 2021 Session

Three African women, Jennifer Amejja, Edna Kaptoyo and Rita Uwaka, speak about the importance of women’s cultural, traditional knowledge and practice for food sovereignty, agroecology and community forest management. How they grow nutritious food, use and protect medicinal plants, select and exchange seed, establish vital community seed banks, provide livelihoods and support the local economy. Also how they protect forests, many of which are sacred, and ensure replenishment and restoration of watersheds.

Indigenous women are especially threatened by climate change and biodiversity destruction, yet their intimate knowledge makes them uniquely placed to protect and restore critical ecosystems; strengthen traditional food systems; conserve species; and transmit indigenous knowledge to future generations.

However, industrial plantation agriculture, often supported by governments and finance institutions in developed countries, is fuelling landgrabs, destroying local food systems, and accelerating climate change, biodiversity loss and human rights abuses, especially for women.  How should we collectively address this critical issue?

Speakers:
Jennifer Amejja
Edna Kaptoyo
Rita Uwaka

Chair:
Gertrude Pswarayi-Jabson
