In Senegal, traditional wrestling has its roots in the culture and community of rural villages, particularly among the Serer people.
What began as tribal preparations for battle developed into village ritual and soon a form of entertainment. Men traditionally fought at village festivals after the harvest season as a way of attracting women, proving their virility and bringing honour to their communities.
But in the past 50 years, traditional Senegalese wrestling has grown exponentially to become a major national sport for both men and women - with celebrity fighters competing for big prize money, in large stadia and in front of thousands of fans.
"We can say that it is not just a sport," says sociologist Aly Tandian. "It has always been a socially stimulating factor in the Senegalese society."
"Today, there are villages that have become well known in all of Senegal because they have given birth to great wrestlers," he adds.
Today, the professional wrestlers at major events - like "Bombardier" and Eumeu Sene - are household names, winning over $80,000 a fight.
Up-and-coming fighters like "Lacrymogene", who we meet in this film, win more modest sums - from a few to a few hundred dollars. But the winnings mean that for some of the poorest Senegalese, wrestling can genuinely represent a means of clawing their way out of poverty.
Traditional wrestling is part of a wider phenomenon of combat sports in West Africa, including in countries like Gambia, Guinea and Gabon. In Senegal, the sport has attracted both genders, with the women's game now popular and well respected in its own right.
Olympic fighter Isabelle Sambou has won the African Championships nine times. Safiato Biola has competed in women's events in Europe and North Africa, and Anta Sambou says winning three golds at the 2017 Francophone Games has built her confidence and transformed her life.
"Wrestling is part of our culture," says Isabelle.
"If you wrestle when you're young, you can wrestle through your whole childhood, and as an adult you can still wrestle. Especially the girls, don't be afraid of a wrestler."
"I love my achievements so much that it has made me stronger," she says. "I also represent a force in my village, and that has made me reach the top."
In this film, we explore the popularity of traditional wrestling among Senegalese fighters and fans alike, men and women, urban and rural - from small village festivals to arena events in the capital, Dakar.
We look at wrestling as an expression of pride and cultural identity but also to show how sport - at even the lowest levels - can mean the difference for some between modest, local success and a miserable existence on the margins of society.
As Tandian says, "There are certain places, like the suburbs of Dakar, where young people only have two options: wrestling or leaving the country."

Who is The San Tribe? A Great Description:
The San tribe has been living in Southern Africa for at least 30,000 years and they are believed to be not only the oldest African tribe, but quite possibly the world's most ancient race. The San have the most diverse and distinct DNA than any other indigenous African group.
The San are descendants of Early Stone Age ancestors. Clans and loosely connected family groups followed seasonal game migrations between mountain range and coastline. They made their homes in caves, under rocky overhangs or in temporary shelters. These migratory people do not domesticate animals or cultivate crops, even though their knowledge of both flora and fauna is vast. The San categorized thousands of plants and their uses, from nutritional to medicinal, mystical to recreational and lethal. San men have a formidable reputation as trackers and hunters.
The San have no formal authority figure or chief but govern themselves by group consensus. Disputes are resolved through lengthy discussions where all involved have a chance to make their thoughts heard until some agreement is reached. Certain individuals may assume leadership in specific spheres in which they excel, such as hunting or healing rituals, but they cannot achieve positions of general influence or power. White colonists found this very confusing when they tried to establish treaties with the San. Leadership among the San is kept for those who have lived within that group for a long time, who have achieved a respectable age, and good character.
The San are excellent hunters. Although they do a fair amount of trapping, the best method of hunting is with bow and arrow. The San arrow does not kill the animal straight away. It is the deadly poison, which eventually causes the death. In the case of small antelope such as Duiker or Steenbok, a couple of hours may elapse before death.
The San belief system generally observes the supremacy of one powerful god, while at the same time recognizing the presence of lesser gods along with their wives and children. Homage is also paid to the spirits of the deceased. Among some San, it is believed that working the soil is contrary to the world order established by the god.
The San eat both animal and vegetable. Their selection of food ranges from antelope, Zebra, porcupine, wild hare, Lion, Giraffe, fish, insects, tortoise, snakes, Hyena, eggs and wild honey. The meat is boiled or roasted on a fire.

In Burkina Faso, there are reports that 200 soldiers have been killed in attacks by an Al Qaeda affiliate.
It happened in the northern province of Loroum. The attacks follow an earlier assault in which 60 soldiers were killed at a military post in the same province.
Nearly half of Burkina Faso is not under government control.
Attacks from armed groups linked to al Qaeda are on the rise, not only in Burkina Faso but other African countries in the Sahel.

There is a rise of fake AI videos, particularly in the context of Pan-Afrikanism, using the example of a purported endorsement of Captain Traore by the Pope. This video outlines the methods for identifying fake videos, including visual and audio tests, and emphasise the importance of media literacy to combat misinformation. The conversation highlights the potential dangers of AI-generated content and the need for vigilance in verifying information.
A commission of inquiry into the policies of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank that have entrenched Africa’s debt crisis, undermined public services, and driven inequality.
The commission of Inquiry will hear testimonies on how these institutions’ austerity measures and debt-driven models harm African development, with the goal of raising awareness, advocating for debt cancellation, and pushing for reforms that prioritise people over creditors.
Following a wave of coups in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, military regimes have entrenched their rule, established the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), withdrawn from the regional bloc ECOWAS, and dismantled mainly Western-led bilateral and multilateral stabilisation mechanisms. These shifts have caused further disruption to an already unstable region plagued by ever-growing jihadist violence and economic hardship. With multilateralism in retreat, bilateral power dynamics are taking on new roles: Russia, Turkey, Iran and increasingly Qatar and the UAE are vying for diplomatic influence and economic footholds in the region.
