The feeling of security and the reality of security don't always match, says computer-security expert Bruce Schneier. At TEDxPSU, he explains why we spend billions addressing news story risks, like the "security theater" now playing at your local airport, while neglecting more probable risks -- and how we can break this pattern.

Thursday, June 13th 1974.

Footage of Samora Machel, the leader of FRELIMO (Frente de Libertação/Mozambique Liberation Front), the African guerrilla movement then seeking independence from Portugal rejecting a peace proposal from the new Portuguese government, a military regime which had overthrown the right-wing authoritarian Estado Novo regime on April 25th 1974.

Speaking at an OAU Summit in Mogadishu, Somalia, Machel described Portuguese colonialism in southern Africa as "the most decadent and corrupt form of foreign domination."

Reuters Text:

The leader of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), Mr. Samora Machel, rejected the proposals out of hand. He said the portuguese proposals - which include a referendum and the pledge of self-determination -- were insults to the people of Mozambique.

Mr. Machal described Portugal's policies in Mozambique as "the most decadent and corrupt forms of foreign domination", and he claimed conditions were now favourable for their destruction. The guerrilla leader said constant work by Frelimo had alerted the masses to the justice of their cause and their battle against the Portuguese. Although the territory was still under military occupation, " the manifestations" in all urban centres had demonstrated the solidarity of the Mozambique people.

Without distinction, the people - of all races, ethnic groups, religious beliefs and social origins - were demanding national independence and total adherence to the principles and programmes of Frelimo. Mr. Machel said the determination and unity was forged in clandestine battle, in suffering and in torture, in prison and in concentration camps". He said the ten-year guerrilla war, directed by Frelimo, had strengthened the determination and unity of the Mozambique people against "colonialist aggression." Later in his speech, Mr. Machel referred to the dialogue now under way between Frelimo and the Portuguese Government.

He said it could not develop into proper negotiations until Portugal recognised Mozambique's right to total and absolute independence. He added that Frelimo would also have to be recognised as the Mozambique people's legitimate representative.

To answer a few common questions:Yes they have shade, they have a shelter right beside their water, they just choose to never use. 🙄No, the white horse is not in heat they are all geldings 😂I’ve spent most of my life researching and learning how horses communicate with each other and through their body language. In the wild, the lead stallion would ensure that his herd is always looked after, especially the young, old and pregnant ones. In times when water or food may be scarce, the leader will also ensure his herd is taken care of before he is.What Rudnik does here is a perfect display of those natural instincts. This is not just an assumption but rather an observation of their natural instincts in action. Rudnik is displaying all the characteristic traits of a leader here. The rest of the herd had already gone up for water but Rudnik noticed one of the older boys had lagged behind. This is when he goes over to push him up the hill towards the rest of the herd and the water. These exact same interactions are how stallions in the wild protect and care for their herd.Horses body language is amazing and once you learn to identify their natural instincts and how they are displayed even in domesticated horses, you will understand horses so much more!

The family of Sonya Massey is demanding justice after they say authorities tried to cover up her fatal shooting by a sheriff’s deputy in Springfield, Illinois, by initially claiming it was “self-inflicted.” Police body-camera footage showed this was a lie. The 36-year-old mother of two was shot dead in her own home on July 6 after she called 911 for help. “This is the worst police shooting video that I’ve seen. It is so senseless,” says Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney representing the family. “[Massey] needed a helping hand. She did not need a bullet to the face.”Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on over 1,500 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. Somalia's modern history is a tale of independence, prosperity and democracy in the 1960s, military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s - followed by a desperate decline into civil war and chaos almost ever since.

The effect of the war has been to scatter the Somali people in their millions to refugee camps and neighbouring countries - and in their hundreds of thousands to the UK, Canada and the United States.

Somalia gained independence from Britain and Italy in 1960. It held free and fair elections and was ruled democratically from 1960 to 1969.

Once labelled the "Switzerland of Africa", Somalia enjoyed almost a decade of democracy. The first elected president of Somalia, uniting the former British and Italian territories, was Adam Abdullah Osman who reigned for seven years. He was succeeded, freely and peacefully, by Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke.

Sharmarke, however, was assassinated by one of his own bodyguards in 1969.

Speaker of the Somali Parliament Mukhtar Mohamed Hussein took over, but his brief, six-day tenure was cut short by a military coup led by General Siad Barre, ending Somalia's period of democratic government.

Whatever its faults - and there were many - Barre's 22-year rule effectively created modern Somalia, building one of Africa's strongest armies and massively improving the literacy of the population.

Yet Barre, who gained the support of the US and the Soviet Union, the superpowers of the day, also dissolved parliament, suspended the constitution, banned political parties, arrested politicians and curbed press freedom.

"From then, there was a downward trend. In everything. A disintegration. And every time things were going down, the military regime was becoming more brutal and more dictatorial," says Jama Mohamed Ghalib, a former Somali government minister.

But when Barre launched the Ogaden war in 1977 to take the Somali majority region from Ethiopia, it provoked serious international opposition, including that of the Soviet Union which had once supported Barre but now sided with Ethiopia. The Somali army was forced to withdraw.

But the other long-lasting outcome was civil war, with myriad competing factions and frequent intervention by foreign powers and neighbouring countries.

In 2006, the Islamic Courts Union split into several factions, one of which was Al Shabab. The radical group still controls large parts of the south of the country today.

Brazil is known worldwide for its large mixed race population due to centuries of intermigling between blacks, browns, whites, and indigenous people. While the country has long promoteditself as a place where races freely mix, Brazilians have also spoken about other sides and elements of the story. One other elemt that many have confirmed is the fear that many black Brazilian women have for having black children. Due to the violence and racism that black children suffer in Brazil, some women have expressed fear and even a desire to have whiter looking children so that their kids don't suffer the same way as they and other black kids do.

This television news program is about police brutality in Oakland, California, 1974. The narrator talks about how the town was over half black in the 1960's and the police force was all white, and how blacks were generally treated with disrespect. Some of the policemen interviewed say they were hired as super cops and did not want to change the way things were run. Changes were implemented, blacks were hired, and blacks in the community were beginning to feel a change as older policemen were told to be less aggressive or be fired. An Action Review Panel was set up to review police-community relations. Several incidents resulting in arrest of blacks and charges of disorderly conduct were heard by the panel. Speaking in this film is Ron Dellums and police chief, George Hart. The song, "Hey, You Old Oakland Town" is heard as the camera scans streets and black community of Oakland.
