Black Culture Matters is a series hosted by the African American Studies Institute (AASI) at Prince George's Community College, revolving around this year’s theme: Resisting De-humanization through the Humanities.

The goal of this series is not to declare the value of Black lives to those who do not wish to acknowledge it. The goal is, instead, to examine the ways in which people of African descent have expressed their own humanity, to affirm the meaning-making with which they have resisted being "thingified."

These four (4) lecture-discussions will not only offer historical and cultural context for the given topics; they will also challenge the community to think about how expanded knowledge might inform the racially charged present moment.

⁣This presentation sets out to introduce the concept of bedroom colonialism and the related concept of mulattofication as intergenerational scourges of classical and contemporary Kmtyw ‘Black People’. By means of multimodal, multidisciplinary analysis and participant observation of victims of bedroom colonialism (BC) via fieldwork in their natural environment, we demonstrate multiple examples of these concepts in their socio-cultural milieu. We find that, as intended by anti-Black perpetrators of BC (eurasians), bedroom colonialism has and continues to pose a significant impediment to the acquisition, maintenance, and expansion of Abibitumi ‘Black Power’ and Abibifahodie ‘Black Liberation’. In conclusion, once the root causes of bedroom colonialism are understood, conceptual clarity may be attained and correct courses of action may be pursued.
“Bedroom colonialism” is a term used to describe a form of intimate or interpersonal colonialism that manifests within romantic and sexual relationships, often highlighting the dynamics of power, race, and exploitation. It involves the perpetuation of colonial attitudes and behaviors in private, intimate spaces, where one partner, often from a dominant or colonizing culture, exerts control or dominance over the other, typically from a marginalized or colonized background.
This concept can be understood through various lenses, such as:
1. Racial Fetishization and Exoticism: It involves viewing a partner primarily through a racialized or exoticized lens, reducing them to stereotypes or fantasies rooted in colonial histories. This reduces the partner to an object of desire based on their race, rather than valuing them as a whole person.
2. Power Dynamics: In these relationships, power imbalances reflect broader societal hierarchies, where the dominant partner may exert control, whether overtly or subtly, over the marginalized partner. This can manifest in emotional manipulation, coercion, or even subtle forms of dominance that replicate colonial power structures.
3. Cultural Appropriation and Erasure: The dominant partner might appropriate or disrespect the cultural practices and identities of the marginalized partner, further entrenching a sense of dominance and superiority. This can lead to the erasure of the marginalized partner’s cultural identity within the relationship.
4. Historical Context: This concept is rooted in historical practices where colonizers exploited and dehumanized colonized people, including sexual violence and forced relationships. These historical traumas often reverberate in contemporary relationships, reflecting unresolved issues of power, control, and racial dynamics.
In examining “bedroom colonialism,” it is crucial to consider the work of scholars and thinkers who delve into the intersections of race, sexuality, and power, such as bell hooks, Audre Lorde, and Frantz Fanon. These perspectives help shed light on how intimate relationships can perpetuate systemic inequalities and the importance of addressing these dynamics to foster more equitable and respectful partnerships.

Dr Hastings Banda is one of the most underrated African dictators. During His 33 year rule, the country experienced the worst human rights violations and paternalistic control of the Malawians.

He controlled every aspect of their lives, treating his people as children and addressing his ministers as my boys

He banned televisions, beards, dreadlocks and long hair among men. Any sort of political dissent was ruthlessly dealt with through his secret police and Militia.

Though he never had children, he relied on the support of his official hostess and former secretary Cecilia Kadzamira and Kadzamira's uncle John Tembo, who saw themselves as his successors when he left power.

He is remembered on the continent as the only leader who maintained ties with the Apartheid South Africa and Portuguese regimes; backed Nixon in Vietnam and refused to support an armed struggle against the Ian Smith regime in Southern Rhodesia.

Social media influencer Luana Safire recently remembered an incident when she was 12 years old and had to stand up to her history teacher because of his low opinion of black capability.

Safire's defense of black people speaks to the invisibility of blacks and Africans in history textbooks that spread knowledge of world history. Brazil's education system, like that of many other countries, is Eurocentric in its depictions of Europeans in contrast to the way non-Europeans are presented.

Safire's desire to correct her teacher shows what happens when people of African descent begin to have access to information that has long been denied to them.

Discussing whether blacks can receive true justice in American courts, prisons, or in post-prison life, this special Black Journal episode examines America's judicial system from a black perspective. Entitled, Justice? the presentation will include five segments: 1. The Courts: Legal experts examine the difficulties blacks face in American courts the virtual impossibility of receiving trial by pears; the systems tremendous backlog of cases; lack of money for competent legal assistance; and pressures to accept lesser pleas, among other problems. 2. Prison: In exclusive interviews conducted within the San Quentin and Soledad Prison in California, prisoners talk candidly about their lives in prison the dehumanizing conditions and racial pressures; their reasons for being there often poverty or lack of competent legal assistance; prisons failure to rehabilitate and adequately prepare prisoners for post-prison life; and the problem they face upon release which virtually ensure failure to establish normal, productive lives. 3. Angela Davis: At UCLA, where Angela Davis was ousted as a philosophy instructor, her lawyer, friends and professional associates discuss the events which led to her arrest and her current trial. Miss Davis is charged with murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy to smuggle weapons into the San Rafael (California) Courthouse last August 7 in an alleged attempt to free three black prisoners. The prisoners, known as the Soledad Brothers, were indicted for allegedly killing a prison guard. Miss Davis, now held incommunicado in the Marin County jail in California, appears in film segments made while she was at UCLA. 4. The Jackson Family: Mrs. Lester Jackson, mother of George Jackson, one of the Soledad Brothers and of Jonathan Jackson, who was killed in the alleged prisoner escape attempt, is interviewed along with other relatives, friends, and members of the Soledad Brothers Defense Committee. 5. Soledad Brothers: Lawyers defending the three Soledad Brothers George Jackson, Fiesta Durango and John Clutchette discusses the murder charge and tell why they consider the Soledad Brothers to be political prisoners.

Excerpt from the presentation of Molefi Kete Asante, Professor of Africology at Temple University in the USA, during Session Nine at the Multiversity International Conference on Decolonising Our Universities held in Penang, Malaysia, 27-29 June 2011. He outlined 'The Philosophical Bases of an African University,' pointing out that in the imposition of the Eurocentric worldview in higher education 'there was a Greek at every corner' but that the Greeks themselves 'were but children to Africa, and to India and to China.'

Senegalese-American artist Akon is a five-time Grammy nominee who has sold over 35 million records worldwide and has collaborated with some of the biggest names in popular music, such as Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga and David Guetta.

The musician, songwriter, and producer, who was born in the US but spent much of his childhood in Senegal, is also an activist and a philanthropist - and he has turned his sights on helping Africa.

How many African-Americans do you know actually consider Africa as a vacation spot? Not one... Even just for knowledge, just to know where they came from, just to get an idea of what that is; there is so much fear instilled in them that they wouldn't even want to go there to visit. You mention Africa, they start shaking.

Akon

His current ambitious project, "Akon Lighting Africa," is working to bring solar-powered electricity to Africans in 49 countries by the end of 2020.

Akon is also an ambassador for the non-profit organisation Peace One Day. Last year, he and actor Jude Law brought their celebrity power to Goma to a concert to promote peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

But Akon has also caused controversy through his performance style and his lyrics.

Akon talks to Al Jazeera about running his musical career as a business; his projects - both philanthropic and artistic; singing songs for peace and whether he thinks it can really make an impact; and being an African in the US.
