In this episode, I take up a request from one of our dear subscribers to Powered by Ancestry and then dive into what's commonly referred to as totems--an animal held to have spiritual significance and adopted as an emblem--or what I call spiritual animals. Using my Akan folks' deep knowledge as a guide, I walk viewers through some essential facts of said spiritual animals and how they operate in the life of a person. Note: the leopard is the "spirit animal" for both my maternal and paternal clans, though I focus more on the latter in this episode, and a correction: the disembodied ↄbosom associated with lake Bosomtwe is called Akwasi Bosomtwe Akowuakra, not Kwaku Bosomtwe. Enjoy!

In Part 2 of this insightful reasoning, Dr. Okunini Talawa Adodo explores the roots of Afrophobia on social media and in Black sitcoms. Using scenes from the iconic '90s show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Dr. Adodo illustrates how media can reinforce subtle biases against African identity—even within Black communities.

Here, in almost two hours of recorded material, is the stirring voice of Malcolm X himself in two parallel but very different speeches, one delivered in Harlem's Mosque No. 7, the second at Adam Clayton Powell's Abyssinian Baptist Church.

These speeches were not broadcast but were recorded, on Malcolm's in-structions, by one of his most trusted and faithful lieutenants, then Benjamin 2X, now Benjamin Karim. "Black Man's History" shows Malcolm as minister and teacher, providing his Muslim audience with the cultural roots and lore he knew African-Americans needed in order to recover their pride and dignity.

"The Black Revolution" is a ringing call for black separatism, "a passionate prophecy of judgment on white supremacy" (Booklist). To hear Malcolm's words, in his own voice, is to understand why the New York Times not only called him "a political leader and social analyst" but likened him to "an Old Testament prophet." The End of White World Supremacy is available in paperback from Arcade Publishing.

Kwame Nkrumah was the leader of Ghana from independence until his deposition by a CIA-back coup d'etat in 1966, as well as one of the principal political and philosophical leaders of the Pan-African movement. While friendly with countries such as the Soviet Union, Nkrumah's Ghana was part of the non-aligned movement, and Nkrumah's political philosophy is typically described as a syncretic mixture of Marxism and traditional African cultural ideas.

While the defeats of socialist experiments in West African countries like Ghana and Guinea-Conakry urge reflection on the successes and failures of these ideologies and movements, Nkrumah remains a key figure in the history and competing ideologies of African liberation movements, and thus he, and Neo-Colonialism: The Last Stage of Imperialism, his most famous work, merit study in order to enrich our understanding of African history.
