In this episode, I take up a request from one of our dear subscribers to Powered by Ancestry and then dive into what's commonly referred to as totems--an animal held to have spiritual significance and adopted as an emblem--or what I call spiritual animals. Using my Akan folks' deep knowledge as a guide, I walk viewers through some essential facts of said spiritual animals and how they operate in the life of a person. Note: the leopard is the "spirit animal" for both my maternal and paternal clans, though I focus more on the latter in this episode, and a correction: the disembodied ↄbosom associated with lake Bosomtwe is called Akwasi Bosomtwe Akowuakra, not Kwaku Bosomtwe. Enjoy!
A rare insight (especially from mainstream media) into the forgotten but ongoing war in Yemen. BBC Arabic has secured the first on-camera interviews with US mercenaries from Spear Operations Group, hired by the UAE for targeted killings of Al Qaeda operatives in Yemen and its often ignored cost to innoncent civilian lives. These mercenaries openly discussed their deadly operations with reporter Nawal al Maghafi for BBC World Service Documentary series.

THE ELDERS SPEAK
Happy Independence
But how can we be happy in dependence
Relying on aid is a dead ting
Coz we lose out in trade and investment
There’ll be more pain in our future
Unless we get back the spirit of Nkrumah
There’s war around us from the East to the West
But the real battlefield is the one in our heads.
So dear African presidents where is ya honour
You’re supposed to be serve us with protection and armour
You let down your residents while serving ya donor
Sold us out quicker than boiled eggs in Ghana
Between broad daylight Elon hailing Nazis
And a black president killing Gaddafi
A bullet in the African freedom
That’s two Africans committing treason
Now see what’s happening in the region
So many ppl suffering and bleeding
Due to your lies and deceiving
When Africa’s given way more than receiving
So Mr church pastor what are you preaching
Portraying my Jesus as white’s misleading
Inferiority complex got us skin bleaching
And Nivea capitalising and reaping
I swear it’s frightening
Packaged as skin brightening
A crime to humanity calling for indictment
Our people are sick we need to heal more
That’s why we took down all your billboards
Been banging for my bruddas and sisters
I’m talking way back ancestors
So I couldn’t have it and I couldn’t let it slide when band aid and Geldof tried to take our pride
I done did it on my ones yea I did it alone
And they say that a prophet don’t get love in his home.
But I’m winning at home
Affirm my daughter she is perfect to the bone
And daddy’s been breaking doors
Remember the BET awards
They used to give it to us backstage
I tweeted I ain’t going that day
Coz how can you be black and not respect Africa’s name
Afrobeats harder than shaki
My Jamaicans love it like ackee
Spiritual e go move ya body
And I don’t even understand a word from Asake
So Mr Buju Bunton
What are you wanting
With all due respek
You are reaching and hunting
You sing songs based on Africa liberation
And when we liberated
You out here ranting
We have to move in unison
Bring Garvey’s philosophy to fruition
It’s a worldwide movement
One nation that’s the conclusion
How can we live and be free
The world will stay blind until DRCs
When disunited we’ll always be weak
That’s Nkrumah and Gaddafi
They had a vision of sovereignty
One nation one currency
Self reliant policy
Not one that was driven by the west
Or written to oppress
Nor built on foreign needs
But one to position and progress
They gave the framework so how can we forget
We stand on the shoulders of our forefathers
Our visionaries they wrote the commandments
And it goes…
1 we need to operate as one
2 it’s just us can’t rely on none
3 cut ties from western funds
4 is for sure build our own curriculum
5 African history democratised
Why
Coz we got to undo the lies
It’s time African narrative de-colonised
Coz our contribution made this world civilised
6 recognising we mineral rich
Take ownership and leverage economical shift
7 the people that’s true leadership
Whilst empowering the next generation of kids
8 is for the health care, no more health scare
No more flying overseas to get help there
Invest in local expertise that’s self care
Yes sir Big up Dr Jean Jacque Muyembe
9 is crucial grow our own food
Invest in our soil only way to be fruitful
Exploi(10) has to end
Now we can watch Africa rising again
So right now we’re in a special moment in time. Afrobeats has brought Africans across the globe together in a way that’s never been done.
And as you hear this, there’s a party going on somewhere in the world with Kenyans, Jamaicans, Americans, Ghanaians, Nigerians, South Africans all dancing to the same tune. Afrobeats is the most revolutionary form of Black music ever. Not because it has the most political or conscious lyrics but because it’s bringing so many different cultures from different backgrounds together to spend time around each other…..it’s spiritual. The more time we spend, the more trust that we built
And Trust is the key to our unity. Unity is our only hope of survival. This is how we build a nation this is the Spirit of New Africa.
So today, we honor and celebrate everybody who has contributed to this global wave.
