As far as African dictators go, there is probably no single greater illustration of the nuances and complexities that underpin dictatorships in Africa, than Joseph Desire Mobutu’s 31 year stint, as the leader of the nation known today as the DRC.

A self-proclaimed anti-communist who modelled his entire state apparatus after China’s chairman Mao. A self-styled African revolutionary, who collaborated with his country’s former colonisers to assassinate his own prime minister and a proud Afrocentric, whose love for European luxuries and prestige would see him seize control of an estimated one third of his country’s GDP and build a personal net worth nearly twice the size of his country’s national debt.

A paradoxical man from a nation of paradox. Mobutu may have been stereotypically arrogant and cruel, but he was far from a simpleton. His over 3 decades as Congo’s Supreme leader, would be built on a complex combination of evil genius, will power and good fortune.

Ugandan veterinarian and smallholder farmer Emma Naluyima practices a unique and highly effective blend of integrated farming. In this delightful talk, she explains how she does this on just one acre of land, or about four thousand square metres. In four different quarters, she cleverly manages to integrate the production of cows, pigs, chickens, fish, vegetables, fruits, and fodder, in a sustainable, circular production system that wastes nothing. To cap it all, with profits from the farm, she has managed to build, on the premises, a school that pays it forward by teaching the local children much-needed life skills. These include important lessons about what happens if we optimise every single bit of what little we might have.
Emma is known for being an innovative farmer with skills in veterinary, piggery, fishery, vegetables, training and capacity building. Her ingenuity has earned her several awards in her native Uganda, and globally. She holds a Masters of Health Services Research, and a BSc Veterinary Medicine, both from Makerere University in Uganda. She has collaborated with the University of Wisconsin, with students visiting her farm for training every year since 2014. Emma has served as Chairman of Red Cross Mbarara and has written several op-eds published in the Guardian, Mail and The East African. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Believe it or not, some parts of West Africa converted voluntarily to Islam long before the mass enslavement began across the Sahara and the Atlantic. A bit of a rehash from last week but we will detail what happened to cause it being embedded into society.

Explore how the US government hunted bison to near-extinction in the 1800s to force Native Americans onto reservations.

--

By the mid-1700s, many Plains nations survived on North America’s largest land mammals: bison. They ate its meat, made the hides into winter coats and blankets, and used the bones and horns for tools. But in the following decades, millions of bison would be deliberately slaughtered, threatening the survival of Plains societies. Andrew C. Isenberg shares what led to the animal's near-extinction.

Lesson by Andrew C. Isenberg, directed by Rémi Cans, Atypicalist.
