This video offers a presentation of the concept of religion according to the understanding the Kôngo people had of this notion before their encounter with the Europeans.

Religion was understood as n'kisi nsi, the use of n'kisi as divine spirits to empower human beings in order to enable them to fight the evil effects of demonic spirits.

The kôngo concept of n'kisi means spirit and power. It alludes first to God, the Most High, and to holy ancestors as animating spirits and protecting power surrounding human beings. This implies that the concept of n'kisi is alike the Igbo concept of Chi and the Yoruba concept of Ase.

It is thus anomalous to reduce the meaning of n'kisi to the Western concept of fetish.

The ideas exposed in this video were taken in our book titled BUKÔNGO which can be found at

Thursday, January 19th 1961.

Reuters Text from 1961:

Mrs Pauline Opanga Lumumba, wife of the deposed Congolese Premier Patrice Lumumba-was seen in a highly distressed condition January 19 (in front of a) hut in the native quarter of Leopoldville (later Kinshasa). She had just returned from her appeal to the United Nations for the return of her husband. Seated with her was her two-year-old son Roland Gilbert.

But she - and the wives of Lumumba's fellow prisoners Maurice Mpolo and Joseph Okito-were given no firm promise by UN authorities, and had to return home. Mrs Lumumba-who had also requested to visit her husband, said: "We spoke to a man and asked him to help get our husbands back because we have no money."

Mr Lumumba was transferred Jan 18 from imprisonment at Camp hardy at Thysville to a Katanga prison. In a statement Jan 19 mr Tshombe, self-styled President of Katanga Province, refused to indicate where Mr Lumumba was. He also denied he had been beaten by his soldiers.

Source: Reuters News Archive.

Note:

It was later established that Patrice Lumumba had been murdered by a Belgian commanded firing squad on January 17th 1961.

On this episode of Yediemu we got closer to the elders of Akuapim to tell us the history of the people of Akuapim, he told the history as follows ; The Odwira festival is celebrated by the chiefs and peoples of Fanteakwa District and Akuapem in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The Odwira Festival is celebrated by the people of Akropong-Akuapim, Aburi, Larteh, and Mamfe. This is celebrated annually in the month of September and October. The festival celebrates a historic victory over the Ashanti]s in 1826. This was the battle of Katamansu near Dodowa. It was first celebrated in October 1826.

This was during the reign of the 19th Okuapimhene of Akropong, Nana Addo Dankwa (I) from 1811 to 1835. It is a time of spiritual purification where the people are renewed and receive protection. It is also celebrated by the people of Jamestown in Accra. This is due to the associations formed through the intermarriages of the Ga and Akuapem people.

Customarily, the scheduling of the festival occurs simultaneously with the reaping season when there is bumper food; during which gratitude is shown to the Ancestors by the people. Being a yam festival, thanksgiving for the bumper reap is principally demonstrated in the "giving food to the ancestors".

A West Virginia couple was charged for locking Black adopted children in a barn and forcing them to work in awful conditions. Sharon Reed and Wosny Lambre discuss on Indisputable. Tell us what you think in the comments below.

"A white couple from rural West Virginia is back behind bars after a judge revoked the initial bond and raised it to $500,000 apiece — more than double the amount they faced last year when police arrested the pair on charges of locking their adopted Black children in a barn and forcing them to work as “slaves.”

Donald Ray Lantz, 63, and Jeanne Kay Whitefeather, 62, both of Sissonville, were ordered to reappear in Kahanwha County Court on June 11, more than eight months after each posted a $200,000 bond following their arrests in October.

At the time, police conducting a wellness check at the Cheyanne Lane home were shocked to discover two of the couple’s five adopted children living in deplorable conditions, padlocked inside a ramshackle storage shed on the back of the property, which had no working lights or running water."

⁣The Art of Healing, a feature documentary that tells the story of transatlantic trade from the Ghanaian perspective, has premiered.
The documentary, which was inspired by the works of Ghanaian sculptor Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, premiered at Silverbird Cinemas in Accra last Sunday, with some attendees from the diaspora and some top personalities gracing the occasion.
The feature documentary themed: "Finding Freedom from the Descendant Pain of Slavery" is a production of V1 Film Studios with Mr. Amar Deep Singh Hari as the Executive Producer and was directed by Yaw Pare and Darius Matheson.
The documentary captures scenes of Akoto-Bamfo's Nkyinkyim museum, which showcases various artistic monuments, including the 1500 concrete life-size heads and 3000 terracotta miniature sculpted heads.
According to Akoto-Bamfo, these installations at his museum represent captive Africans who were abducted and sold forcibly during the transatlantic slave trade.

"The healing from the trauma of the slave trade has not been fully addressed by us. So on my journey in trying to find myself as an African and Ghanaian, I came across all forms of trauma in people and that is why I saw the need to do this documentary so that Africans can heal and move forward, especially considering our dark history," he told pressmen at the documentary premiere.
He added: "The Nkyinkyim museum is a creative space that seeks to contribute to telling our story, and it has over the years incorporated our understanding of what it means to promote and preserve our intangible cultural heritage."
The documentary details the shock, horror, distress, and anger that occurred during the peak of the transatlantic slave trade and also recalls how the slavery phenomenon started.
Mr Yaw Pare, a co-director of the documentary, was elated with the massive turnout of the premiere and stated the commitment of his outfit to make more of such a series.
"This documentary is the beginning of creating a dialogue between the diaspora and also bridging the communication gap so that we can both understand each other about the real happenings of slavery so that we can move forward," he said.
The feature documentary is expected to be made available on Netflix in the coming weeks.
