In this episode of Back to Africa, I share my shocking experience in Namibia, a country with a deep and painful history of colonization. During my visit, I stayed on a massive 43,000-hectare farm owned by a single German family which purchased the land from descendants of German settlers, who stole the land from the Herero and Nama people. This stark inequality left me outraged and compelled me to dive deeper into Namibia’s colonial past.I explore the horrific role of Lothar von Trotha, the German military officer responsible for orchestrating the Herero and Nama genocide—the first genocide of the 20th century. Through conversations with Germans living in Namibia, I was confronted with a troubling denial of this dark history, raising the question of accountability and reconciliation. This episode sheds light on how Germany has handled—or failed to handle—this chapter of its colonial past. Despite recent attempts at reparations, I question whether the nation has truly learned from history. By examining the effects of land theft and colonial injustice, I invite you to join me in reflecting on what justice and accountability should look like in post-colonial Africa. Watch, learn, and engage with this critical discussion.

Dr. Jemima Pierre, born in Gros Morne, Haiti and raised in Miami, Florida, speaks to The Other Narrative about why Haiti is paying a price - 220 years after it yanked Independence from the jaws of colonizers. Dr. Pierre speaks about the resilience of Haitians and their struggle against imperialism - in all of its iterations - and the fact that Haiti's emancipation is part and parcel of the global African/Black emancipation.

Dr. Pierre also speaks about the importance of Haiti to US imperialism; the way the West manufactures narratives; racism in international structures; regional neocolonial countries in service of imperialism; and so much more.

Dr. Jemima Pierre is Professor of Global Race in the Institute of Race, Gender, Sexuality and Social Justice (GRSJ) at the University of British Columbia and a research associate at the Centre for the Study of Race, Gender and Class at the University of Johannesburg.

Trained as a sociocultural anthropologist in the African Diaspora Program at the University of Texas, Austin, her research and teaching engages with Africa and the African diaspora across three broad areas of inquiry: 1) the relationship of political economy to race, as articulated through capitalism, white supremacy, and imperialism; 2) migration, transnationalism, and diaspora; and 3) the ethics and politics of western knowledge production and disciplinary formation.

Dr. Pierre has published widely; her essays and articles have examined the racial history of the discipline of anthropology, race and colonialism, theories of the African diaspora, the cultural politics of racial formation in Africa, Western resource extraction in Africa, and the history and politics of U.S. imperialism in Haiti and the Caribbean.

She is also the author of The Predicament of Blackness: Postcolonial Ghana and the Politics of Race. The Predicament of Blackness was winner of the 2014 Elliot Skinner Book Award in Africanist Anthropology and long listed for the 2013 OCM – BOCAS Literary Prize.

Her next book, titled Of Natives, Ethnics, and True Negroes: A Counter-History of Anthropology, will be published in 2024.

Dr. Thomas Dykstra, Laboratory Director of Dykstra Labs and AEA Scientific Advisor, is a trained entomologist with a vast background in agricultural consulting. For years, Tom has been illuminating farmers to the science behind insect pressure and demonstrating why insects do not—and cannot—attack healthy plants.

In our latest webinar, Dr. Dykstra sits down with John Kempf to explain what constitutes a healthy plant, the machinations of insect digestion, and how to use the Leaf Brix chart as a reference guide for any kind of pest pressure.

Martin Luther King Jr. gives a speech at Howard University in 1966 for the Gandhi Memorial Lecture

When I found this recording it was on a cassette tape and I digitized it from there. During the digitization process with old cassettes, it's not uncommon for the tape to run a bit fast or slow and lead to some speed and pitch distortion. Sometimes, this can be alleviated by altering the speed on Youtube.

The United States has a decades-long problem of shortages for affordable medicines that treat serious diseases, including cancer and diabetes. But hundreds of plants in China and India are ready to supply low-cost drugs to the American market, just as they do for hospitals across Asia and the world.

Drug companies, hospitals, and clinics in the US are highly incentivized to run shortages of the least expensive medicines, as patients have no choice but to switch to more costly treatments. And regulators and inspectors for the Food and Drug Administration are highly recruited by drug companies, which reduces how many inspectors are available, and how many foreign plants can be inspected and approved. The FDA is currently short of hundreds of plant inspectors, most acutely so in Asia, which is where all the low-cost drugs are made.

1 Organic pineapple
1 can organic coconut milk

1 Large Kichen Knife
Juicer and/or blender
Pineapple corer
Can opener

1. Turn the pineapple on its side and chop off the top as shown.

2. Take the corer and remove the pineapple down to within a quarter inch of the base.
Note: Don't core too far down or you will puncture the base of the pineapple. If you do that your pina colada will spill out of the bottom when you try to refill the rind.

2. Turn it on at the pineapple setting and put the pineapple in the juicer. Turn off when finished.

3. Open the can of coconut milk.

4. Add a 4 or ounce can of coconut milk and the juice pineapple in a glass blender. Optionally you can add some of the pulp from the juicing to get the fiber and the nutrients.

If you don't have a blender you can stir the ingredients together with a spoon or put in a jar with a lid and shake vigorously.

5. Pour the Pina Colada back into the rind.

6. Drink from the rind directly or with a straw.

Pineapple is a good source of vitamin C, manganese, and B1 and B6. Don't let your pina colada sit in open-air for very long.

It might be good to pair similar nutrient supplements with your pina colada for improved absorption of those nutrients.

The best way to get the nutrients is to drink your pina colada quickly. The more contact with oxygen the more the vitamin oxidizes and breaks down. In other words, the vitamin C loses its potency and you lose the nutritional value.

Pineapple and coconut are both immune builders.
