A group of former Mississippi lawmen known as "The Goon Squad" were sentenced today on state charges related to the torture and beating of two black Rankin County men.
The five former Rankin County deputies and a former Richland police officer pleaded guilty to state charges in August for their involvement in a racist assault against Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker.
The disgraced law enforcement officers have already been sentenced to serve between 10 and 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to federal charges.
Rankin County Circuit Judge Steve Ratcliff sentenced Brett McAlpin, Jeffery Middleton, and Daniel Opdyke to 15 years for hindering prosecution and five years for conspiracy to commit hindering prosecution.
Jousha Hartfield got ten years for hindering prosecution and five years for conspiracy to hinder prosecution.
Christian Dedmon was sentenced to 20 years for burglary and five years for conspiracy to commit hindering prosecution.
Hunter Elward received 20 years for aggravated assault, 20 years for burglary, and five years for conspiracy to commit hindering prosecution.
The state sentences will run concurrently and will run concurrently with the federal sentences. They must permanently surrender their law enforcement certificates.
