As the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels continue their advance in the eastern DRC, the hearing of a historic case has begun at the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights. For the very first time, the court is hearing an inter-state dispute brought by the DRC against Rwanda over alleged human rights violations. M23 rebels have seized significant territory, including Goma, the largest city in the east. They are now advancing towards South Kivu's capital Bukavu and have seized two towns on the road to the city, Ihusi and Kalehe. Meanwhile, tensions are also escalating with other African nations. Video shared on social media on Friday (February 14) showed armed men walking down a street in Kavumu, with gunshots heard in the background.

Rwandan-backed M23 rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo took control of the strategic Kavumu airport that serves Bukavu, the region's second biggest city, the rebel alliance and a civil security source said on Friday.

Reuters was able to confirm the location as Kavumu from the buildings, trees and road layout, seen in the video which matched file and satellite imagery of the area. The date when the video was filmed and the identity of the armed men in the video could not be independently verified. However, three sources told Reuters that M23 rebels reached Kavumu on February 14.

The rebels have been trying to push south towards Bukavu since they seized Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo, at the end of last month.

Rwanda-backed M23 rebels continue their advance in DR Congo's mineral-rich east. The rebels have seized the airport serving the city of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province. This represents a major strategic victory for the rebels, as it cuts off air supply routes for DRC army and humanitarian operations in the region. The rebels have so far North Kivu's capital Goma, the largest city in mineral-rich east. They have now entered neighbouring South Kivu and have seized Kavumu, where the army had set up a defensive line. After breaching this they can easily target South Kivu's capital Bukavu. Rebels' advance come as African leaders are gathering to discuss the crisis at the AU summit.
