The reason why Portugal and Spain were not as “brutal” to the enslaved Afrikans in their colonies was because Portugal and Spain were also colonized by the Moors.
The Moors did not use brutal force to rule over the Portuguese and Spanish people but instead used the assimilation power of Moorish culture over their rule of the Iberian Peninsula.
At the height of the Moorish Empire in the Iberian peninsula, the peoples of Spain and Portugal were speaking Arabic, converted to Islam, were eating Moorish foods, wearing Moorish clothes, marrying Moorish men and women.
But once Spain and Portugal got enough power they kicked out the Moors and eradicated almost all Moorish culture and traditions from their society; that even today if you don’t know about Moorish history, you will never know that the Moors ruled Spain and Portugal for over 700 years in the Iberian Peninsula.
Thus, Portugal and Spain learned the assimilation rule of power from the Moors.
