The national liberation struggle of the Sahrawi people of Western Sahara has been ongoing for 50 years. Through the twists and turns of history, the people of Western Sahara have faced Spanish colonialism, the occupation of their territory by Mauritania and Morocco, and expulsion from their territory to refugee camps in Algeria. Despite this long struggle, Western Sahara's history and politics remain relatively unknown to many outsiders. Bill Fletcher Jr., a member of the TRNN Executive Board, speaks with Sidi Omar, the UN Ambassador of Frente Poliario, the political organization behind the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

Post-Production: Cameron Granadino, David Hebden

From Democracy Now: We get an update from Morocco, the North African country has declared three days of mourning after the strongest earthquake to hit the region in at least a century. About 2,500 people died in the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on Friday, with another 2,500 injured and the death toll expected to rise. The epicenter was in the High Atlas Mountains located about 44 miles South of Marrakech, where many villages remain largely inaccessible and lack both electricity and running water. The earthquake also damaged parts of Marrakech, including its old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We speak with Moroccan scholars Abdellah El Haloui, in Marrakech, where he is head of the English Department at Cadi Ayyad University, and Brahim El Guabli, associate professor of Arabic studies at Williams College, originally from Ouarzazate, Morocco, which was hit by the earthquake. The days of Africa's resources being used to benefit Western powers instead of the African peoples are dwindling, argues Arikana Chihombori-Quao, the former representative of the African Union to the United States.Although a string of recent coups may give the impression that African nations are turning their back on the West, and looking more towards Russia and China, this is an oversimplification, according to the former diplomat. She tells The Bottom Line host Steve Clemons that the US would be wise to decouple its policy from that of France if it wants to regain trust on the continent.

Description below is provided by the Kings' Monologue. In this short documentary we will be taking a deep dive into the claims made by a heavily referenced study published in Nature communications. It claims that ancient egyptian ancestry is largely non-african, based on dna that was collected from mummies in Middle Egypt. We will be exploring the truth behind these claims, but even more importantly, we will be uncovering some surprising outcomes from this research that have opened new insights, a smoking gun of sorts, into how this data should be interpreted. I advice you to stick around around to the end so you dont miss any of that. OUR SUDAN is a short film to inspire a new generation. Based on a TEDxKhartoum talk by the same name it has been made to inspire young Sudanese to think differently about themselves and their future - to inspire them to believe that, "the future is not a matter of what will be, but what could be. That it is a choice and it is theirs to make."The film OUR SUDAN tells the story of a generation of young men and women raised in a world of great tumult and change in which the dream of an older generation seems to have been lost. The film presents a new perspective, offering a celebration of Sudan's promise and calling upon young people to, "dream a new dream, the dream of their generation."An Arabic version of the same is under the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-28EsAZ_dVo

Hafiz Farid's rare film that looks at the Darfur conflict through eyes of Darfur's people placing their experiences front and center without the celebrity fanfare that marked the Save Darfur Movement in the early 2000s. Darfur's experience is paralleled with the trauma and healing process of other survivors of genocide and horrific wars.

⁣Christopher Tounsel,
Professor of African Studies at University of Washington, discusses how
identity and religion in particular Christianity and liberation theology have
been used by South Sudanese society as a form of resistance and expression of
agency against the state policy of Arabization and Islamization by successive
Khartoum governments against the fight for human and citizen rights in South
Sudan prior to the region's independence from Sudan in 2011.
