“After fighting over the Canary Islands of the coast of West Africa, Portugal continued to ‘explore’ down the coast of West Africa and wanted the Pope of the Catholic Church to justify Portugal’s claim to Africa.
So in 1453 and 1455, Pope Nicholas V issued Papal Bulls granting Portugal the right to control, christianized, and civilized the wild savage men of Africa and also to acquire sovereignty, jurisdiction, and title of lands in Africa.”
