With the fall of Granada, the Age of Discovery begins! First up is Henry the Navigator. Henry was the son of John I. He set Portugal on the fast path to discovery. His patronage allowed for the exploration of the coast of Africa, naval improvements like the Caravel, and he was renowned as creating his famous School of Navigation (which may not have existed).

Portugal continued to ‘explore’ down the coast of West Africa and wanted the Pope of the Catholic Church to justify Portugal’s claim to Africa.
So in 1453 and 1455, Pope Nicholas V issued Papal Bulls granting Portugal the right to control, christianized, and civilized the wild savage men of Africa and also to acquire sovereignty, jurisdiction, and title of lands in Africa.
Between 1419 and 1446,
Henry the Navigator sponsored expeditions down the coast of West Africa in search of slaves. Year by year, Portuguese ships worked their way down southward on the slope of West Africa.
It was during Henry the Navigator sponsored expeditions down the West Coast of Africa that the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade will begin.
“By 1444, 240 slaves were brought back into Portugal and paraded for sale in Lisbon. In the next 15 years over 20,000 slaves, Black men, women, and children will be brought back to Portugal to sold as slaves; thus, the Transatlantic Atlantic Slave Trade was well established by the Portuguese.
