The Orire School Kidnappings: A Warning for Southern Nigeria?
The recent abduction of dozens of schoolchildren, teachers, and even toddlers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has sent shockwaves across Nigeria. In a chilling display of brutality, one of the teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was beheaded by the abductors. Among the victims are children as young as one to four years old, teenagers, and members of staff.
For many Nigerians, the attack raises troubling questions. How did a region once considered relatively secure become vulnerable to such violence? Is this an isolated criminal act, or evidence of a deeper and more dangerous trend? Are violent extremist groups and terrorist networks gradually extending their reach into southwestern Nigeria?
To examine these questions, I am joined by Taiwo Adebayo, researcher and security policy advisor on the Lake Chad Basin and West and Central Africa at the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, South Africa. Adebayo is an award-winning journalist and investigator who has reported on some of Africa's most significant security and governance issues, including cross-border criminal networks, violent extremism, and corruption.
