These bold economic shifts coincide with escalating geopolitical tensions across the Sahel. Niger, alongside Mali and Burkina Faso under the Alliance of Sahel States, has cut ties with former colonial power France and forged closer security partnerships with Russia. Tensions reached a boiling point after a deadly assault at Niamey’s international airport, leading military leader General Abdourahmane Tchiani to accuse Western powers of backing regional instability.
