Azwad is the territory in Northen Mali and a general name for Tuareg-Berber lands. These are the Taureg that inhabit these lands from times ago.
When the french were busting through the region they made a deal with them, if they fought for the frnech they would have their own region going between Mali, Niger, Mauritania, Algeria.
