Zambia is set to hold its general elections on August 13 this year. The landlocked, mineral-rich Southern African country has been recently moving to boost its copper production, as well as strengthen economic relations with its East African neighbor Tanzania, through the China-backed upgrading of a 51-year-old railway corridor linking both countries.

On July 21, barely a month before Zambia’s upcoming elections, US, UK and Belgium-based NGO, Global Witness released a scathing report, in which it accused the Zambian government of impoverishing its people and trampling on their human rights to serve foreign corporate interests.
