Processed sugar, also known as refined sugar, is chemically produced sugar that's extracted from sugar beets or sugar cane and added to other foods to make them taste sweet. Processed foods and beverages are major sources of added sugar in the diet.

Consuming processed sugar can increase your risk of many health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, weight gain, and some types of cancer.

You'll find processed sugar packaged in heavily processed foods that taste sweet.

Processed sugar contains a lot of calories and doesn't provide much in the way of nutrition or health.

Unprocessed sugars or refined sugars and sweeteners include:

* Honey: benefits- have antibacterial properties, when you purchase honey, go for the raw natural kind; it has more minerals, B vitamins and is close to what bees are actually making.

* Pure Maple Syrup: benefits-maple syrup contains more antioxidants than broccoli or bananas. By the way, antioxidants are nutrients that protect our cells against hearts disease, cancer, diabetes, etc.

* Molasses (unsulfured): Molasses is tricky as there are several different types, some of which are refined and some which are not. Apparently molasses is produced during the refining of sugar. It’s about 65% as sweet as sugar, and it delicious in baked goods. There are different varieties of molasses: Light molasses is from the first boiling of the sugar cane, dark molasses is from the second, and blackstrap, the third. Though molasses can be sulfured or unsulfured, the unsulfured molasses is preferred, meaning that the fumes used in manufacturing the sugar aren’t retained as sulfur in the molasses.

* Coconut Sugar: benefits-Coconut sugar is made from the blossom’s sap on the coconut tree. The sap is concentrated down to a syrup and then evaporated to form a sugar. Yes, coconut sugar is still sugar, but it’s not processed or refined, and it comes from a plant, the coconut plant. It also has a lower glycemic index and high nutrients compared to the regular processed refined sugar.

* Sucanat: Sucanat is unique because the molasses and the sugar are kept together during the process of making it; typically molasses is removed from the sugar during processing which leaves you with granulated sugar. During the production process, the molasses of unrefined sugar is typically not centrifuged, not separated. Because of this, the unrefined and raw sugars retain much of the molasses contained in their original form. Refined processed sugars, on the other hand, have had much of their molasses removed during “purification” processes. As a result, sucanat sugar contains a higher content of molasses and a lower content of sucrose than refined sugars. Sucanat is still sugar, just in a pure natural form. It has a strong molasses flavor compared to white processed refined sugar, yet it retains all of the nutrients such as iron, potassium and calcium. Sucanat is essentially organic, natural brown sugar. The brown sugar you typically find in the stores is molasses added to white sugar; while sucanat is the real deal natural raw sugar.

* Brown Rice Syrup: benefits-Brown Rice Sugar is wonderful for vegetarians and vegans who want to use it as a replacement for honey. Brown Rice Syrup has a unique butterscotch taste and is made with brown rice grains and enzymes that are cooked down into a liquid. It’s not as nearly as sweet as sugar, but it has a wonderful taste.

* Date Sugar: Date Sugar is simply dehydrated ground dates. It’s very similar looking to brown sugar and needs to be stored in a cool place in an airtight container as it easily retains moisture. Date Sugar has a delicious taste. It is great for baked goods.

* Maple Sugar: Maple sugar is made from 100% real maple syrup and happens when a majority of the liquid is heated out, leaving… maple sugar! You can use maple sugar in your coffee, tea, on oatmeal, in pancake or waffle batter, etc.

* Turbinado Sugar: Turbinado sugar, or raw cane sugar, is much less refined than granulated processed table sugar. Turbinado sugar is low-calorie, and a favorite for vegans and vegetarians. Turbinado is known for its large crystals, and is often used to sprinkle over cereals, baked goods, etc
* Agave

* Agave nectar

* And many many more

These unprocessed sugars and sweeteners provide more nutrition for our bodies than processed sugars, meaning unprocessed sugars are all natural and easier for your body to digest and process. This means you can enjoy your meals with honey, a natural, unprocessed, unrefined sugar; and as always enjoy in moderation. Unprocessed, unrefined sugars and sweeteners actually have nutritional benefits, unlike most processed refined sugars and sweeteners.
