“Schnapps gin has been among the most well known FOREIGN consumer goods in West Africa. Schnapps gin was imported from Germany and the Netherlands in vast quantities between circa 1880 and 1914. Following World War I, importation from Germany came to a halt, while imports of Dutch schnapps, have continued to flow into West Africa. Today, billboards, commercials and advertisements for schnapps gin evoke African traditional culture and custom and has become a link to the traditional status of Chiefs and Elders and alludes to traditional cultural ceremonial activities in Africa, especially West Africa.”
