Join me as I dive into the complex situation in the Sahel and see if I can figure out whether Akufo-Addo is right about what he calls worsening security after the French exit! Welcome back to Izizi Africa, where we break down the biggest geopolitical developments across Africa. Today, we’re diving into a statement that’s making waves across the continent. Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo recently said that since the withdrawal of French troops from the Sahel, the security situation there has gotten worse. Guess where he said that and when? Here it comes. In an interview with French TV, FRANCE 24, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo said he hoped Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger would rejoin the Economic Community of West African States regional bloc. He said that the decision of the military juntas in the three countries to withdraw from ECOWAS was a setback. Then he dropped a bombshell. He said in answer to a question, that the security situation has worsened since the departure of French troops from the Sahel region last year. Now hear it yourself. And I’ve got some thoughts—and questions—about what he’s saying and what it all means.
