Kumasi, Ghana, is the capital of the Asante region. This is the seat for one of the most powerful kingdoms of West Africa, surviving British colonisation for centuries. The Kumasi central market is one of the largest in Africa and is run and lead by women. In this documentary, we meet the female traders of this important economy.

The documentary series “Disappearing World” was originally broadcasted between 1970-1975.
As an anthropological landmark of its time, the series tells the story of traditional communities endangered by the modern world’s progressions.
The series stands as a historical document of daily life in remote and threatened societies, such as the Cuiva, Embera and Panare Indians of Colombia, the nomadic Tuareg of the Sahara, the Kurdish Dervishes and the Meo of China.

⁣Ogbunigwe, the deadly mass destruction missile that made the Nigerian federal troops jittery, was a product of the scientific feat of the breakaway nation of Biafra. It was, allegedly, the first technology to be wholly designed, developed, mass-produced, and launched in Africa.

It was used in combat during the Nigeria-Biafra War (1967-1970) and at the height of production, about 500 units were being produced every day in Biafra. #HistoryVille #Ogbunigwe

Beads are a fundamental part of Ghanaian heritage. Not only they testament to the vibrance of Ghanaian creativity, but they also play a significant role in the country's history, rituals and culture.

Koforidua is a town in Eastern Region of Ghana located approximately 80 km from the capital and main commercial centre, Accra. The beads market is believed to have been in existence for over 200 years, previous locations having included open spaces. The current site is a dedicated market facility provided by the local government authority and is a weekly beads and crafts market which happens on a Thursday next to the Koforidua Jubilee Park. Locals are usually happy to give a visitor directions.

The space is filled with a myriad of units varying from shops to open-sided stalls (which look like temporary structures to the visitor) to table top displays. With facilities like these it goes without saying that on a rainy Thursday the market is pretty quiet.

Goods on offer include:

Beads
Beaded jewellery
Jewellery findings
Glass beads raw materials such as broken louvre blades and glass bottles
metal bars,
yarn
wood
leather and cowry bags
brass products and artefacts,
wood carvings and,
And anything else which might interest customers. There will, for example be small food and drinks sellers.
