The Ancient Kmtyw (Egyptians) called their country Kmt (Kemet), literally the "Black Land" (kem meant "black" in ancient Kmt). In Kemet, black was associated with the night, with the Afterlife, and also with resurrection and rebirth. Black was also associated with fertility, we believe because it was the colour of the fertile soil that was deposited after the annual flooding of the River Nile.

Human-kind begins in Africa, evolving to become anatomically modern humans 300,000 years ago in Africa. Significant out-migrations from Africa began 95,000 years ago into different habitats on earth, leading to the human differentiation that created the "races". In the 1980s, one anthropologist stated "We are all Africans under the skin".
