Entretien avec son Excellence Amadou Hampâté Bâ, un des interprètes les plus authentiques du génie de la tradition orale africaine. Il est donc un interlocuteur particulièrement capable d'effectuer une synthèse vivante de la réalité africaine, et de la faire découvrir à ceux qui l'ignorent. C'est lui qui est l'auteur de la formule devenue célèbre : "En Afrique, quand un vieux meurt, c'est une bibliothèque qui flambe". L'émission qui lui est consacrée veut mettre en évidence la grande richesse de ses connaissances et l'apport de son message d'Africain éclairé au patrimoine universel de la culture. Amadou Hampâté Bâ est un de ces derniers traditionnalistes qui vont disparaître et son témoignage constitue à ce titre un précieux document sur l'Afrique. Il rappelle que "la culture africaine est d'ordre spécifiquement oral ; la colonisation, l'alphabétisation, et à un niveau différent, le travail ethnologique, ont brisé les ressorts qui permettaient à cette culture de se perpétuer et de se développer". En attendant, Amadou Hampâté Bâ veut mobiliser les esprits pour que tout soit enregistré et filmé. C'est d'ailleurs ce qu'il fait ici lui-même, avec intelligence et humour. En ethnologue et en poète, il nous explique les modes selon lesquels les jeunes sont initiés, et en quoi la transmission du savoir est indépendante du savoir lui-même. Les âges de la vie, les cérémonie de circoncision, tout est prétexe à chants et à création collective. Amadou Hampâté Bâ chante et récite les poèmes et les contes qui se transmettent depuis des générations. Il évoque le lion et l'univers extraordinaire qui entoure sa capture. Il raconte avec humour comment les africains mentent aux ethnologues. Mais c'est quand il parle de la femme et de l'éthique africaine qu'il est peut-être le plus émouvant.

" En Afrique quand un vieillard meurt c'est une bibliothèque qui brûle." La célèbre formule prononcée en 1962 par Amadou Hampâté Bâ à la tribune de l'Unesco indique le sens de la démarche qui a guidé toute son œuvre : sauver de l'oubli la tradition orale africaine.
Comme ces mémoires d'un enfant peul dans le Mali du début du siècle qui sont à la fois un formidable roman d'aventures et un livre de sagesse où Amadou Hampâté Bâ, raconte avec humour ses années de formation quand il fréquentait à la fois l'école française et l'école coranique, tout en s'imprégnant des traditions ancestrales africaines.
Mémoires d'un témoin de son siècle et de son peuple : l'histoire de la colonisation africaine vue par un enfant du Mali. Servi par la prodigieuse mémoire des peuples de tradition orale, l'auteur revisite les souvenirs d'une enfance et d'une adolescence bousculée par les événements familiaux et politiques.

On 2 October 1958, Guinea became the first of France’s colonial territories in Sub-Saharan Africa to declare its independence in an act of defiance against its former colonial master.
Ahmed Sekou Toure, known as a charismatic and radical figure in Africa's post-colonial history, was the leader of the country at the time and he was driving this rebellion by the former French Colony.
However, Guinea and Sekou Toure, achieved this status of independence against the wishes of its former colonial master, France, and afterwards the nation faced an onslaught of administrative and diplomatic assault by the French which seemed to have been designed to drive the country to its knees.
The french colonial elite in Paris got so furious with Sekou Toure’s defiance, such that in an act of fury the french administration in Guinea destroyed everything in the country which represented what they called the benefits from french colonization.
After this whole fiasco, Toure would go on to rule the country of Guinea for 26 years, and his time in power and legacy divided opinions.
In this episode of African Biographics, we look at the life and legacy of Ahmed Sekou Toure, Guinea’s first president who stood up to the French, and his time in power as the leader of that country.

The Indonesian government claims that the actions of the West Papuan Freedom movement (the OPM) force it to resort to violence. However, the OPM alleges that the military itself is orchestrating acts of terror, such as the recent murder of two American school teachers, in an attempt to justify further intervention.

Ethiopia is constructing a $4.8 billion dam along the Nile River that has Egypt angry. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, or GERD, will have a capacity of 6.45 GW, doubling the country’s power capacity. It will provide electricity to 60% of Ethiopian households and create a massive reservoir for tourism and the fishing industry. However, the project poses a threat to Egypt, who relies heavily on the Nile River. This has led to tensions between the nations and a political battle over the river.
