Haiti fought the most extraordinary revolution in human history. Enslaved people defeated Napoleon's armies, founded the first Black republic, and changed the map of the world forever. And then France sent warships to the harbor and handed them a bill — not for goods or services, but for the "crime" of no longer being property.
