Ethiopia is constructing a $4.8 billion dam along the Nile River that has Egypt angry. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, or GERD, will have a capacity of 6.45 GW, doubling the country’s power capacity. It will provide electricity to 60% of Ethiopian households and create a massive reservoir for tourism and the fishing industry. However, the project poses a threat to Egypt, who relies heavily on the Nile River. This has led to tensions between the nations and a political battle over the river.

10 Billion Barrels of Oil Discovered off Namibia's Coast | Vantage with Palki Sharma

A new oil deposit has been discovered off the coast of Namibia in southern Africa. The discovery was made by the Portuguese oil company, Galp Energia. Galp says that the deposit contains about 10 Billion barrels of oil. This adds to the earlier discoveries made by Britain's Shell, and France's Total Energies. Altogether, about 21 Billion barrels of oil have been discovered in Namibia so far, and more explorations are underway. Namibia has a chance to use these deposits to boost its economy, but that will take time. Oil production is unlikely to begin before 2029. Namibia will also have to find a way to prevent the Western energy giants from taking the lion's share of the wealth. Palki Sharma tells you more.

This talk occurred at Malcolm X College on December 27, 2012 at the City-Wide Kwanzaa Celebration. The first two minutes are missing, but this is the bulk of what I shared. The main points that are missing are that Kujichagulia is ultimately about our capacity to define reality, not through words, but through the arduous work of social transformation. I also stated that Baba Hannibal incessantly cautioned us against imbibing the opiate of self-deception, not deluding ourselves into thinking that belief was sufficient when action is the ultimate expression of our ideals. Lastly, I used Amenemhat's Weheme Mesu in ancient Kemet (Egypt) and the struggles of the African Maroons in the Western Hemisphere as models of Kujichagulia--Africans defining their own reality. — at Malcolm X College.
