Farmer Managed Seed Systems (FMSS) have, for hundreds of years, played a crucial role across the African continent in ensuring a diverse diet for millions of people and sustaining biodiversity. However, there is no continental law governing seeds in Africa and corporates have taken this as an opportunity to grab resources from the agricultural sector - which still occupies 70 % of the population into Africa - and sell them seed, fertilizers and pesticides. In some regions various stakeholders such as seed companies and their allies, are promoting uniformity in the name of high yield seed and food security. 

Despite the push of multiple legal-political instruments to install industrial seed systems as the vehicle of African agriculture, 80% of seeds used by farmers in Africa come from their own reserves.  In this panel, organised by AFSA, we will learn about two levels of resistance to the African seeds takeover by industry: first is led by civil society organisations at sub regional level, engaging the push of seed law revision favourable to hybrid seeds and GMO’s. Second is at national levels where farmers’ organisations break the law by organising seed festivals; sharing indigenous seed, knowledge and practices.

On March 7, 2004, Zimbabwean authorities arrested about seventy men at the Harare International airport for illegal arms trafficking and immigration violations.

It soon came to the surface that these men in question were mercenaries that were on their way to Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea to overthrow the long time leader of the country, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

These mercenaries had been organised by mainly British Financiers including Mark Thatcher, the son of the former UK Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

The leader of this group was Simon Mann , a former partner in the defunct private military firm Executive Outcomes. As their cover story, Simon Mann claimed that they were picking up weapons for a security job at a mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A day later, fifteen more men were arrested in Equatorial Guinea and they were linked to the group that had been arrested in Harare, Zimbabwe. After about two weeks, the conspirators in each country signed confessions admitting that they were headed to Equatorial Guinea to stage this infamous coup, known as the Wonga Coup. With Wonga being British slang for money.

In this Episode of African Biographics, we look at the perpetrators of the coup, as well as an account of this audacious, ,yet error-prone 2004 coup attempt against The President of Equatorial Guinea by these mercenaries.

A recently donated film to the Public Policy collections of the Mudd Manuscript Library, long thought lost has been digitized and is now viewable online. "Segregation and the South," a film produced in 1957 by the Fund for the Republic, reported on race issues in the South since the 1954 Supreme Court decision in the Brown v. Board of Education case. It examined the slow progress of integration at elementary and secondary schools and colleges, as well as the white backlash to the decision. It also documented the Montgomery bus boycott. Much of the footage came from news organizations like CBS and NBC that was re-packaged, but some original material was filmed in Clarksdale, Mississippi, by writer and director James Peck. Broadcast on June 16, 1957, a Sunday, from 5-6 p.m., it aired on over 30 ABC affiliates, 12 in the South, but none in the Deep South.
