In Ethiopia, small-scale farmers face an intensification of extreme weather events under climate change as rainfall becomes more erratic and temperatures rise. This video shows how researchers supported by the Climate Change Adaptation in Africa program contributed to the identification and implementation of farming techniques that improve yields and protect food security under these conditions.
Produced by A24 Media, this is part of a series of six videos on research supported by CCAA.
The Climate Change Adaptation in Africa research and capacity development program (2006-2012) was a joint initiative of Canada's International Development Research Centre and the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID).

ORFC Global 2021 Session
The Shashe block of farms, in the Maszinvgo province of central Zimbabwe, is home to 500 farming families. Together with the Zimbabwe Smallholder Organic Farmers Forum (ZIMSOFF)’s and Shashe Agroecology School, they have worked to revive arid cattle-ranching land into rich, abundant food forests.
The school trains farmers in agroecological farming techniques such as inter-cropping, water-harvesting and farmer-to-farmers exchanges but at the heart of their practice is a special emphasis on seed and food sovereignty and ecological production integrated with seasonal ceremonies and rituals. There is also a deep emphasis on farmer led solutions to socioeconomic, ecological and cultural issues, which has stimulated designing a methodology for holistic nurturing of landscapes at the Shashe block of farms.
Join farmers and the founders of the Shashe Agroecological School in Zimbabwe, as they put their new internet connection to the test!

Hunger is still the biggest killer in #Africa and it has a lot to do with colonialism. redfish worked with filmmakers in #Senega #Nigeria #Kenya #Zimbabwe to tell local stories of food and hunger, but also the growing resistance to the continued influence of former colonial powers, their corporations and institutions. Economic sanctions from the Global North, debt and loans from the IMF, aid dependency, and enforced capitalism have all played a central role in Africa's manufactured food crisis.

We perceive time in terms of seconds -- the length of a heartbeat. We can't even imagine events that unfold over several days and years or be aware of elementary particles that flash into existence for less than a billionth of a second without high-tech camera equipment and exceptional filming techniques.
