Slavery: The White Woman's Burden
White Women as Slave Owners
Today we're discussing Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers' work, They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South. This work delves deep into the realities of white female slave ownerships, demonstrating the ways in which white women leveraged competing systems of oppression, particularly race and gender, to attain power, status, and wealth. Instead of neat rows of monoculture, forest gardens combine fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines and perennial vegetables together in one seemingly wild setting. This type of agroforestry mimics natural ecosystems and uses the space available in a sustainable way. UK-based Martin Crawford is one of the pioneers of forest gardening. Starting out with a flat field in 1994, his land has been transformed into a woodland and serves as an educational resource for others interested in forest gardening. This short film by Thomas Regnault focuses on Crawford's forest garden, which is abundant, diverse, edible, and might be one answer to the future of food systems.

This is your Week 15 Igbo language practice session from Igbo Daily Drops — 15 sentences learnt over the past week in Igbo daily drops, built for real-life use. Commands, requests, questions, and the kind of warm, human phrases that make the difference between knowing a language and living in it.
Work through each sentence at your own pace. You will hear it once, then again — then it is your turn. The sentences this week move from saying where you are located, who you are , to asking who others are.
The Igbo sentences we learnt this week are :
Anyị bụ ndị Igbo - We are Igbo people.
Anyị bụ umunna - We are kinsmen.
Anyị bụ ezinulo - We are a family.

Ha bụ ndị ezinulo anyị - They are our family.
Kedụ ndị ha bụ? - Who are they?
Anyị na-arụ ọrụ - We are working.

Before Iran was America's enemy, it was America's biggest weapons customer. The US sold the Shah billions in advanced fighter jets, destroyers, missiles, and surveillance aircraft — including the F-14 Tomcat, the most powerful interceptor ever built, a jet so exclusive that only the US Navy was allowed to fly it. American technicians flooded into Iranian cities by the thousands. CIA officers trained Iran's secret police. And Nixon personally signed a blank check allowing the Shah to buy any weapon he wanted, no questions asked.
Then, in 1979, a revolution swept the Shah from power — and every last piece of that American military hardware fell into the hands of a government that considered the United States to be the Great Satan.
This is the story of how America armed Iran, how those weapons were turned against American interests, and how the consequences of that decision are still shaping the Middle East today. From the 1953 CIA coup that started it all, to the hostage crisis that ended the alliance, to the nuclear program that America itself helped create — this is a chapter of history that explains more about the current US-Iran standoff than anything you'll hear on the news.
