Zanzibar -- The Dark Side of Paradise is a twenty minute news documentary which looks at the causes and consequences of the longest blackout in history. The film assesses how unremitting power problems in the Spice Islands are putting their fragile economy at great risk, whilst also denying their impoverished population a safe water supply. It also provides a background of Zanzibar's current political situation and their dependence on tourism in order to illustrate why the power cuts are only serving to aggravate an already dire situation.

In one of the remotest parts of Africa, the Ethiopian tribe of Kwegu people live along the great Omo river. This documentary takes us deep into the territories of the Kwegu and Mursi tribes, introducing to the audience a rare glimpse of their daily life and special traditions.

The documentary series “Disappearing World” was originally broadcasted between 1970-1975.
As an anthropological landmark of its time, the series tells the story of traditional communities endangered by the modern world’s progressions.
The series stands as a historical document of daily life in remote and threatened societies, such as the Cuiva, Embera and Panare Indians of Colombia, the nomadic Tuareg of the Sahara, the Kurdish Dervishes and the Meo of China.

Travelling through the Australian continent, one is often appalled by the living conditions of the Aborigine people. Having lost touch with their culture and traditions, many of them have become outcasts or alcoholics who aimlessly wander the streets of the Australian cities. From the early 1800s to the late 1960s, Aborigines were gradually deprived of their land by the white man who used it for herding, cropping, and mineral extraction. Forced to leave their homelands, Aborigines were often separated from their children, who were sent to live with white families or to boarding schools, in an attempt to teach them the white man’s values. Today 390,000 Aborigines account for less than 3% of the current Australian population. Learn how they are beginning to find their place in a society which has excluded them for so long. Meet and share the life of Aborigines who through art, dancing, hunting, work, or spirituality, are finding ways to better their future.

The Somali Dervish movement was a thorn in the British colonial side for 20 years starting at the beginning of the 20th century. The leader Mohammed Abdullah Hassan was able to resist military expeditions and establish his own proto-state in the region.

I-Tal food is derived from the word "vital", namely natural, pure and clean food. Taste for I-Tal has developed alongside Rastafarian engagement with the valorization of traditional knowledge about health and ethnomedicine, small farming and land use, all while promoting sustainability. Its motto could be " live simply, so that others may simply live".

On 2 October 1958, Guinea became the first of France’s colonial territories in Sub-Saharan Africa to declare its independence in an act of defiance against its former colonial master.

Ahmed Sekou Toure, known as a charismatic and radical figure in Africa's post-colonial history, was the leader of the country at the time and he was driving this rebellion by the former French Colony.

However, Guinea and Sekou Toure, achieved this status of independence against the wishes of its former colonial master, France, and afterwards the nation faced an onslaught of administrative and diplomatic assault by the French which seemed to have been designed to drive the country to its knees.

The french colonial elite in Paris got so furious with Sekou Toure’s defiance, such that in an act of fury the french administration in Guinea destroyed everything in the country which represented what they called the benefits from french colonization.

After this whole fiasco, Toure would go on to rule the country of Guinea for 26 years, and his time in power and legacy divided opinions.

In this episode of African Biographics, we look at the life and legacy of Ahmed Sekou Toure, Guinea’s first president who stood up to the French, and his time in power as the leader of that country.

In much of the world, national borders have shifted over time to reflect ethnic, linguistic, and sometimes religious divisions. Spain's borders generally enclose the Spanish-speakers of Europe; Italy and Croatia roughly encompass ethnic Italians and Croats. Thailand is exactly what its name suggests, the land of the Thai. Africa is different, its nations largely defined not by its peoples heritage but by European colonialism.

But as the continent becomes more democratic and Africans assert desires for national self-determination, the continent's decision to maintain colonial era borders is a subject of intense debate.

Heroin is having a devastating effect on communities across South Africa. That's the conclusion of a study by an EU-funded project known as ENACT. A drug called Nyaope made of low-grade heroin is presenting a particular challenge. Users engage in a dangerous practice known as bluetoothing, in which the intoxicated blood of one user is injected into the veins of another. ENACT based its findings on interviews with gang members, drug dealers, users and police. They also found that the government and law enforcement are failing to tackle the problem. Some viewers may find some images in this report distressing.

Ghana is one of the most expensive countries to live in Africa.

The price of essential goods and services has increased sharply since the beginning of the pandemic.

"It’s too much for us," some say, adding that the situation has become unbearable.

Rising fuel and food prices are affecting all parts of society. In the last four months the price of drinking water has risen twice.
