Especially in light of the #EndSARS movement, a lot of politicians in Nigeria have expressed their belief in a need for social media regulation, with one man going as far as filing a lawsuit to stop Twitter from operating in the country. But what's Nigeria's Social Media Bill all about, and why are activists and social media users calling to #EndSocialMediaBill?

BBC Africa's Yemisi Adegoke explains.

The New Age of Empire takes us back to the beginning of the European Empires, outlining the deliberate terror and suffering wrought during every stage of the expansion, and destroys the self-congratulatory myth that the West was founded on the three great revolutions of science, industry, and politics. Instead, genocide, slavery, and colonialism are the key foundation stones upon which the West was built.

The President of Sri Lanka started pushing to build a new port in a small town at the south end of Sri Lanka because ambitious projects like this make you look like a good, caring politician. The only problem was that everyone, including their own government studies estimated that the port wouldn’t be profitable. But then the President announced that the project had been greenlighted - with help from none other than China.

The port opened in 2012, and the forecasts were right - no one was interested in using this new port. And it’s finances were in the hole. So the President went back to China for another loan, this time for $757 million. So what did they do? They took out another loan from China, this time for $1 billion dollars, to help pay off that upcoming debt payment. It’s safe to say that Sri Lanka found itself at the mercy of the Chinese government. It was drowning in debt payments and was left with an expensive port no one wanted to use. And now, China owns 85% of that port and managed to squeeze 15,000 acres of land around that port as well.

Debt traps, debt diplomacy is nothing new. China is probably just taking a page out of the original master at this game: the US. Why did the US go through all this effort to indebt these Less-Developed Countries, or LDCs? Simple: when you’re a global superpower, you need a lot of resources to stay on top: oil, energy, raw materials, nations under your influence so you can call them up when you need something like votes at the UN, and so on.

Today, China is in a similar position - they’re desperate for energy, money, and resources to continue their astronomical growth to the top.Who knows in the long run what will happen with China's colonialism. China has the ability to be forceful when needed, especially in their sphere. History would say China will follow the old model, but things have radically changed before. China is making mistakes but continues to sell these projects.

This lecture focuses on the topic of education and is part one of a series of presentations given in 1989. It (the series) attempts to "operationally define" an African-centered (relevant) education. The lecture is only general, of course, and much of what it covers will be dealt with in greater detail in the soon-to-be-published book, Educating the Black Child for the Twenty-First Century: A Rationale for an African-centered Pedagogy. Look for this some time this year or 2017-2018. Contact and other information are provided below:

This is the fuller version of the presentation I delivered at the Re-Engaging Pan-Africanism Conference at Birmingham City University, Dec 2018.

The presentation explores the relationship between Culture & Economics as an attempt to:
Rescue "culture" from reductive definitions by demonstrating the relationship between it & economic development.
Demonstrate how revolutionary movements have pursued economic development from a culturally appropriate foundation.
Its pre-recorded, but will be broadcast with a live chat. I look forward to hearing your feedback.

While astronomy enthusiasts await the first images from the James Webb Space Telescope, we've got a spectacular celestial event to relish: the grand planetary alignment of June 2022. The planets have been putting up great shows in the predawn sky since March last week. As a result, we have had several planetary conjunctions and two planet parades. Unfortunately, Mercury and Uranus were missing in the April and May planetary alignments. But the two planets have joined the parade in June, and we have an alignment of all the seven planets as seen from the Earth. The last time such an event took place was way back in December 2004, almost 18 years ago.

African traditional religion (ATR) is, in reality, in exact science. This nature of ATR was known in ancient Egypt, and it has been kept in the Kongo religion, Bukôngo.

That ATR is an exact science can be proven thanks to the kemetic cosmological argument. This nature of ATR is a powerful denial of the suggestion of the cultural inferiority of the Black people.

It is also a powerful tool for the reunification of the Black Nation.

It is thus important for this dimension of African traditional religion to be brought back in all the trends of religion bequeathed by our ancestors.

More on this subject can be found in my book titled BUKÔNGO available here:

⁣In the 1960s most African countries gained their independence but more than six decades later they still experience political and economic pressure from the West. African current laws concerning resource extraction make it as easy as possible for private corporations to take resources out of the continent. And in most of the countries production licences that were issued by former colonial institutions are still in place. However, Africans’ growing awareness that they can form their own self-governance creates more freedom of choice for African countries, and makes them less dependent on the Europeans.
In 2022 Mali openly defied French neo-colonialism and forced the international coalition to withdraw troops from the country after decades of presence. ‘All of Africa is watching Mali right now. We are adjusting our course in Africa here in Mali. <...> I think we are gradually moving towards our sovereignty’, says painter and art history professor Oumar Kamara. He believes that European democracy doesn’t match African culture. ‘But in Russia, I realised that we were respected in Africa. They had a totally different policy and opinion concerning African countries. Neither the Soviet Union nor Russia ever colonised any African countries’, adds the scholar. Thus, in their battle for freedom, a growing number of Africans are willing to have closer ties with Russians, as they think Russia can give them security. What future awaits rapidly growing African society?

Nyaminyami is a river god who lived in the Zambezi river and is believed to protect the Lozi and Tonga people, giving them sustenance in difficult times. It is said that in the 1950s, the snake-like creature was provoked by whites when they built Kariba dam, separating him from his wife.
