You exist. You shouldn’t. Stars and galaxies and planets exist. They shouldn’t. The nascent universe contained equal parts matter and antimatter that should have instantly obliterated each other, turning the Big Bang into the Big Fizzle. And yet, here we are: flesh, blood, stars, moons, sky. Why? Come join us as we dive deep down the rabbit hole of solving the mystery of the missing antimatter.

MODERATOR: Brian Greene

PARTICIPANTS: Marcela Carena, Janet Conrad, Michael Doser, Hitoshi Murayama, Neil Turok

OPENING FILM: Animation by Eoin Duffy of Studio Belly, written by Justin Weinstein and Brian Greene

Africa's Largest Dam: Geopolitics of the Nile

The dam is at the center of Ethiopia’s bid to become Africa’s biggest power exporter. Economic growth in Ethiopia, which is Africa’s second-most populous nation, has been stifled by a lack of electricity. Industry revenues are decimated by the nightmare of daily, unpredictable power cuts. The dam’s power will also help with similar problems in Sudan, Kenya and Djibouti, all of which are connected to Ethiopia’s grid and will begin importing power from it in the coming years. Long but futile negotiations over the years have left Egypt and Ethiopia and their neighbor Sudan short of an agreement to regulate how Ethiopia will operate the dam and fill its reservoir.

Egypt, which is Africa’s third-most populous nation, relies on the Nile for more than 90% of its fresh water supplies and wants a legally binding treaty on how Ethiopia can use the Blue Nile’s waters. With the construction of the Dam (GERD) underway, a complex trans boundary water situation is at hand: the GERD is nearing completion, with no specific agreement yet on water sharing or reservoir operations. The dam can capture more than the average annual flow and can thus dramatically change the river’s flow. Although most Nile waters originate in Ethiopia, nearly all use occurs downstream in Egypt and Sudan. Egypt, fearing major disruptions to its access to the Nile’s waters, originally intended to prevent even the start of the GERD’s construction. In fact, Egypt has called the filling of the dam an existential threat. At this point, though, the GERD is nearly completed, and so Egypt has shifted its position to trying to secure a political agreement over the timetable for filling the GERD’s reservoir and how the dam will be managed, particularly during droughts. Thus the Geopolitics of the Nile has been a hot topic.

Sudan is caught between the competing interests of Egypt and Ethiopia. Although Khartoum initially opposed the construction of the GERD, it has since warmed up to it, citing its potential to improve prospects for domestic development. Nevertheless, Khartoum continues to fear that the operation of the GERD could threaten the safety of Sudan’s own dams and make it much more difficult for the government to manage its own development projects.

Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of a separatist group calling for an independent State of Biafra. His followers call themselves the 'Indigenous People of Biafra' and they've not given up their dream of their own homeland in southeastern Nigeria. The region has seen a surge in attacks, with some 130 police officers killed this year alone. In May, Nigeria's security forces launched an operation to quell the violence which many fear may lead to a new war.
But the conflict between Biafran separatists and the Nigerian government is much older than this recent outbreak.
Meanwhile, reports from Cameroon indicate English speaking separatist militias have joined forces with their Nigerian counterparts. A development that has led to fears of an acceleration in violence. The Biafran secessionists and the Ambazonian Defence Force in southwestern Cameroon share a common border, and a joint purpose: to establish their own states. They say they are already sharing weapons.
One way to defuse the crisis in Nigeria would be good governance. Yet for some in the region it was actually the election of President Muhammadu Buhari, himself a veteran of the Biafran war, that reawakened calls for independence. Now the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu has only heightened tensions.

Malcolm X His Transformations and a introduction to Malcolm through reviewing some of the critical scholarship on Malcolm X.

DR. ASA HILLIARD, III The former Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Urban Education has said the following about Dr. Oba T'Shaka's book The Political Legacy of Malcolm X "Oba T'Shaka has written a book which dwarfs all other writings on Malcolm X. Both Alex Haley and George Breitman suggest that Malcolm made fundamental changes in his position toward the end. It is T'Shaka's contention, and it is this contention that his work documents, that the substance of Malcolm's thought did not change, even though the form may have changed. A careful reading of T'Shaka's book will show that he has eclipsed both of these writers, one of whom has an international reputation."

Dr. Nathan Hare, Clinical Psychologist, Sociologist and Innovator of the Discipline of Black Studies, said ot Dr. Oba T'Shaka's book The Political Legacy of Malcolm X: "For Oba T'Shaka's good work in the organization and uplift of African and African American peoples, he has achieved both national and international eminence. Had I not already regarded Oba T'Shaka as one of the key social philosophers in the Afro-American race today, a reading of this manuscript on the life and death of Malcolm X would have been instructive to me. Its careful even meticulous scholarship is reminiscent of W.E.B. Dubois', The Philadelphia Negro."

Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, noted author, scholar and public intellectual in The New York Times Book Review section, reviewed all the major books on Malcolm X, and ranked The Political Legacy of Malcolm X number one In his review of Dr. T'Shaka's book he wrote: "The Political Legacy of Malcolm X is a clear exposition of Malcolm's political ideas as a revolutionary black nationalist."

Today, we will end this series of three discussions by centering our discussion on one of the two most central issues in African and African American Culture, the Black Family and the Black Extended Family.
. We have our guest Dr. Serie McDougal author of the book Black Men’s Studies Black Manhood and Masculinities in the US Context. Review Dr. McDougal’s background.
3 I will provide an African historical context for the nature of the Black family in the U.S., the Caribbean, South America and Europe. The paradigm or model for African families was discovered by me after I had the most beautiful experience of my life, when I piped into the mind of God and was privileged to have revealed to me the basis for African families. Since the family is the foundation of society, the way African families operated was the way the larger society functioned. This family model derived from the world’s first people who came into being 140,000 years ago, the Twa, who are the mothers and fathers of humanity, and who lived in the highest state of civilization in the history of the world.
