Low taxes have drawn many foreign companies to Mauritius and account for a huge portion of the country's $16 billion GDP. Mauritius is one of Africa's richest countries on per capita basis. However Mauritius long been shadowed by financial secrecy, with the island’s government overseeing LEGAL but QUESTIONABLE processes that have allowed global companies to siphon millions of tax dollars away from other African nations.

Apparently the Sahara has not always been a searing wilderness with little to zero rainfall but was once a vast savanna, reminiscent of grasslands of the Serengeti. And I don’t mean just a few years of extra showers of rain, I mean a climate that was so wet for so long that humans and animals made themselves at home in the Sahara. The mystery therefore is HOW and WHEN this lush grassland turned into the barren wasteland we see today.

I met Samson Ogbole (who invented SOILLESS FARMING in Nigeria) at the YPard Cafe event I attended with my friend Yomi on Saturday 26th June 2018, he spoke passionately about soil-less farming and showed us video proof of farms he had and still working on. I was inspired by his presentation and the level of work he is doing in the Agric sector in Nigeria, so I decided there and then to interview him.

Samson is the CEO of PS Nutrac and has also set up quite a number of commercial farms across Africa. (All third-party videos were provided by Samson Ogbole)

Also known as the ‘Uranium Capital of Africa’, Niger is the world’s fourth-largest producer of uranium ore, it provides 7.5 percent of the world's mining output, from Africa's highest-grade uranium ores, according to the World Nuclear Association. But as the usual narrative goes, uranium represents around 80 percent of the country’s exports but contributes only 5 percent to the national GDP.

Uranium is arguably the most strategic commodity for France and since its discovery in Niger a major chunk of the ore has been exclusively exported to France for over 50 years by Areva, the massive state-owned nuclear power company of France.

While Niger’s uranium lights the Eiffel Tower including one-third of households in France, add to that propping up France's nuclear superpower status, the people of Arlit and Akonan, popularly known as the twin mining towns in Niger – the real owners of this valuable wealth - are living in squalor.

When France began mining uranium ore in the deserts of northern Niger in the early 1970s they promised to build a ‘Little Paris’, in the country. However, the mining towns remain dusty and neglected, scoured by desert sandstorms and barely touched by the mineral wealth it ships off to Europe each year.
