The first image of the Milky Way's supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, has been released by the Event Horizon Telescope. Sgr A* is a supermassive black hole that lies 27,000 light years away from Earth at the center of the galaxy. Its mass is about 4 million times the mass of the Sun but a thousand times less than the black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy, the image of which was released back in 2019.

Beads are a fundamental part of Ghanaian heritage. Not only they testament to the vibrance of Ghanaian creativity, but they also play a significant role in the country's history, rituals and culture.

Koforidua is a town in Eastern Region of Ghana located approximately 80 km from the capital and main commercial centre, Accra. The beads market is believed to have been in existence for over 200 years, previous locations having included open spaces. The current site is a dedicated market facility provided by the local government authority and is a weekly beads and crafts market which happens on a Thursday next to the Koforidua Jubilee Park. Locals are usually happy to give a visitor directions.

The space is filled with a myriad of units varying from shops to open-sided stalls (which look like temporary structures to the visitor) to table top displays. With facilities like these it goes without saying that on a rainy Thursday the market is pretty quiet.

Goods on offer include:

Beads
Beaded jewellery
Jewellery findings
Glass beads raw materials such as broken louvre blades and glass bottles
metal bars,
yarn
wood
leather and cowry bags
brass products and artefacts,
wood carvings and,
And anything else which might interest customers. There will, for example be small food and drinks sellers.

In Southern Benin lies Lake Nokoué, a shimmering lagoon linked to the Atlantic Ocean. Centuries ago, the Tofin people sought refuge from slavery and found salvation on these waters. Here, they built Ganvié, the "African Venice," a floating village whose name means "Here, I’m saved." This unique haven, rich with history and resilience, is where Marc Thiercelin embarks on an unforgettable journey to meet the Tofin community and uncover their incredible story of survival and ingenuity.Documentary: People of the Sea – Ep 18 : Benin (2018)Directed by: Matthieu MailletProduction : Découpages & ARTE FranceWe fully own the rights to the use of the published content. Harvard University released a 134-page report this week that detailed the school’s extensive ties to slavery and pledged $100 million for a fund for scholars to continue to research the topic. The report documents dozens of prominent people associated with Harvard who enslaved people, including four Harvard presidents. Harvard commissioned the study in 2019 as part of a wave of schools reckoning with their pasts and the ongoing legacy of racial discrimination. “Harvard’s ties to slavery begin with the founding of the institution,” says MIT historian Craig Steven Wilder, author of “Ebony & Ivy: Race, Slavery, and the Troubled History of America’s Universities.” Wilder says that while this history is not new, Harvard worked for decades to erase its complicity in slavery. “We’re really only beginning to reconcile and to really struggle with the deep ties that this institution has to slavery,” he says.
