As far as African dictators go, there is probably no single greater illustration of the nuances and complexities that underpin dictatorships in Africa, than Joseph Desire Mobutu’s 31 year stint, as the leader of the nation known today as the DRC.

A self-proclaimed anti-communist who modelled his entire state apparatus after China’s chairman Mao. A self-styled African revolutionary, who collaborated with his country’s former colonisers to assassinate his own prime minister and a proud Afrocentric, whose love for European luxuries and prestige would see him seize control of an estimated one third of his country’s GDP and build a personal net worth nearly twice the size of his country’s national debt.

A paradoxical man from a nation of paradox. Mobutu may have been stereotypically arrogant and cruel, but he was far from a simpleton. His over 3 decades as Congo’s Supreme leader, would be built on a complex combination of evil genius, will power and good fortune.

The Meat Lobby: How the Meat Industry Hides the Truth | Investigative Documentary from 2016

In 2015, the WHO listed one of the additives in processed meats as carcinogenic. That same additive was nearly banned in America in the 1970s – until lobbying from the meat industry discredited the scientists. We reveal how, to impede or halt regulations on certain additives, lobbyists have been working in the shadows for decades. At the heart of this strategy are the scientists who collaborate, who receive generous compensation for studies that promote meat consumption. In conjunction with this, those whose work finds health risks associated with meat are ‘shut down’. From Brittany to Denmark, through California and Wisconsin, director Sandrine Rigaud conducted a year-long investigation on the tactics of the meat industry.

A documentary on the Roman invasion of Nubia and the Kingdom of Kush (24 BC).
⁣In this history documentary we explore another one of the forgotten wars when the Roman army marched beyond the frontiers to explore parts unknown. However in order to contextualize this expedition we spend time exploring the ancient History of Egypt and the History of Nubia. We begin by looking at the geographic features of the Nile which influenced the development of the civilizations along its banks. Next we look at the intertwined development of both Egyptian and Nubian kingdoms over the eras. This covers the overlap of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, the Middle Kingdom of Egypt, and the New Kingdom of Egypt with the Kingdom of Kerma, the Kingdom of Napata, and the Kingdom of Meroe. Finally we discuss how the Roman Empire became involved in Egypt and African history. This began with Pompey and Caesar during their civil war. When Rome then chose to support the Ptolemaic rule of Cleopatra they then further became invovled. The queen would support Mark Antony in his civil war against Octavian but the eastern forces would ultimately lose at the Battle of Actium. Following this event, Octavian, now turned Augustus, would annex Egypt. Over the following decades, the emperor would embark on fresh conquests to win gold and glory. One was the Roman Invasion of Arabia and the other was the Roman invasion of Ethiopia. We covered the former in a previous video and spend the remainder of our time seeing how the conflict into Nubia would unfold. This involves a fascinating series of campaigns fought between Kandake Amanirenas and Gaius Petronius with armies of 30,000 and 10,000 respectively. Its a fascinating look into the African history that rarely gets covered.

Prior to colonialism, food production in Africa was in the hands of African farmers who grew crops mainly for food production. Many explorers to Africa were more focused on acquiring and shipping raw materials to the western world and considered this the most efficient use of their resources. Over time this way of conducting business became expensive and they sought to diversify ways to increase their profits. More often than not, private companies such as the Royal Niger Company, Imperial British East Africa Company, and British South Africa Company incurred high costs in trying to set up a new administration that would protect their interests. These new administrations often introduced tax systems and laws that forced local farmers to grow crops they could openly sell on the local market in order to pay their taxes. This led to the introduction of cash crop agriculture in many parts of Africa.
