An exhibition in central Japan showcases tens of thousands of parts, stripped from the world's top-selling models. Japanese car parts manufacturers were stunned at the advances of Chinese brands BYD and Nio.

Chinese carmakers hold costs down through engineering advances in parts assembly, and with a far higher degree of vertical integration of production. Chinese companies integrate multiple components into one part, and then standardize those integrated parts across multiple car models. This results in far fewer parts per car, faster manufacturing time, and lower vehicle weight.

Industry insiders are increasingly critical of top executives in the US, Europe, and Japan who have been blindsided by Chinese ascent and near-domination of the global car industry. Consultants and engineering experts in China have reported for years on Chinese monopolies of supply chains, engineering breakthroughs, and product quality. Yet the CEO's and top officers of legacy car brands were seemingly unaware of key developments that were upending their own industry, and which now threaten their survival.

Cocoa prices are hitting historic highs, as Western commodities markets are registering deficits of 478,000 tons of cocoa beans.

This is the result of a strategy by West African countries Ghana and Ivory Coast, the two biggest suppliers of cocoa to global markets. Beginning in 2019, they partnered with Chinese firms to process their cocoa in-country, and to sell their product directly to Chinese companies.

By cutting out speculators and traders in Western brokerages, and going around marketing and branding companies in the US and Switzerland, producers in Africa and their buyers in China keep far larger profits for themselves. West African suppliers more than double their exports by grinding their cocoa beans in-country, and Chinese firms realize far higher margins and a guaranteed supply of the world's high-quality processed cocoas.

We look at how the death of Queen Elizabeth II is prompting former British colonies in the Caribbean to replace the British monarch as their head of state. Antigua and Barbuda's prime minister has vowed to hold a referendum soon on whether to become a republic, and Jamaica's ruling Labour Party also plans a vote. The Caribbean at one point formed the heart of England's first colonial empire in North America, with millions of enslaved Africans taken to the islands, where many were worked to death. Dorbrene O'Marde, chair of the Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Commission, says he is not personally mourning Queen Elizabeth's death because her reign helped to "cloak the historical brutality of empire in this veneer of grandeur and pomp and pageantry." We also speak with renowned Jamaican poet and musician Mutabaruka, who says the British monarchy "represents criminal activity" and that the British state needs to make reparations to former colonies like Jamaica to redress the history of abuses. "Actions speak louder than words," he says.
