In the early 80's President Bohta was becoming paranoid about the growing unrest in the townships Project Coast was hatched to develop a biological and chemical warfare Program which would not only suppress the townships but act as a weapon in war. Project Coast involved 200 staff and cost one hundred million rand.

The Roodeplaat Research Base, 15 km north of Pretoria was the centre for the research. The labs were top secret and highly protected. Inside scientists were working on the ultimate chemical, biological weapon which would be small, undetectable and cause paralysis of the muscles or death. Dr. Goosen who headed the biological Program says 'the weapon Placed in the wrong hands could have killed millions'. However luckily the project was disbanded in the early 90's when power was handed over to Mandela.

Africa Uncensored: Journalists Exposing Corruption in Kenya | 2 Dec 2019
Africa Uncensored: Journalists Exposing Corruption in Kenya | 2 Dec 2019 Ambakisye-Okang Dukuzumurenyi 27 Views • 5 years ago

"Our goal is to show Africa as it really is: The good, the bad, the ugly, the potential," says John Allan Namu, an investigative journalist in Nairobi, Kenya.
He co-founded Africa Uncensored, an investigative journalism collective that works to hold the government accountable and cover stories often unreported by the media.
They are working on a massive story: The government is believed to have misappropriated millions of dollars after Kenya's health minister signed a multi-million dollar deal in 2015 for what he said was much-needed hospital equipment. The government also promised to invest in the improvement of Kenya's medical services, which were seen to be especially failing the poor.
Namu had received a tip-off from a source, leading him onto the case.
"The data set that we received showed us that there are corrupt networks in many, many places. But the place we chose to focus our attention on was on the ministry of health because this is one of the president's key pillars for delivery to the public," he says.
"And it seems as if it's either has been hijacked or it was formulated to steal from this country."
They carry out their investigation, using hidden cameras to confront an official, despite fears of reprisal.
Meanwhile they feel the urgency to publish as they speak to those most affected by failures in the health system, including a mother who could not afford her cancer treatment.
Still, the team maintains their faith in the power of journalism.
"I think that they key role of journalism is that we publish the things that some people don't want published, even if that means that we are scared. Because at the moment that citizens have the information that they require to live their lives, that's when positive change happens," Namu says.

Ford Motor CEO visits China, sees existential threats, opportunities, and overhauls in Ford Motor co
Ford Motor CEO visits China, sees existential threats, opportunities, and overhauls in Ford Motor co Kwabena Ofori Osei 42 Views • 2 years ago

Of all the legacy carmakers, Ford Motor Company is best positioned to survive the onslaught of Chinese auto brands. Ford dominates in pickup trucks and commercial vans, industry segments in which Chinese automakers are not yet competitive abroad. They are also the most profitable markets on a per unit basis. The high tariffs and import bans that are designed to keep Chinese models out of North America are of little help to Ford, but serve ironically as a lifeline to Japanese and European companies who exist only as long as the tariffs do.

But Jim Farley, the CEO of Ford Motor, nevertheless is making huge changes at Ford based on his recent experiences in China. In a new strategy, Ford will abandon entirely its ambitions to compete in China in the passenger vehicle markets, and everywhere else in electric vehicles made by Ford's domestic factories. Instead, they will aggressively build new electric vehicle models in light and heavy trucks, designed by their engineers in the US, but produced and distributed by their Chinese joint venture partners.

Tom Mboya | Kenyan Trade Unionist and Political Leader | Meet The Press | April 1959
Tom Mboya | Kenyan Trade Unionist and Political Leader | Meet The Press | April 1959 Ambakisye-Okang Dukuzumurenyi 47 Views • 5 years ago

April 12th 1959.

Audio of Tom Mboya's appearance on NBC's "Meet The Press".

Tom Mboya (1930-1969), the Kenyan trade union and political leader of international repute, was a key figure in Kenya's transition from a British colony to an independent country. His debating and oratorical skills earned him widespread admiration in his country and abroad, including the United States where he spoke on national TV and addressed civil rights rallies.

He was intrumental in founding Africa's first continental labour organisation.

He worked with both Senator John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King jr. to create educational opportunities for African students. Among the beneficiaries were future Nobel Laureate, Wangari Maathai and Barack Hussein Obama Snr., the father of the future U.S. President.

A contemporary of Kwame Nkrumah, Mboya came to public prominence at a relatively young age. He was perceived as a protege of Nkrumah's within the Pan-Africanist movement, and later as a rival.

In Kenya, where he later served as Minister for Economic Planning and Development, he was highly esteemed but was seen as a rival to key figures within the Kikuyu establishment.

His assassin was identified as Nahashon Isaac Njenga Njoroge.

But controversy and conspiracy theories endure over his murder.

Many Luos believed at the time had Mboya's murder was organised by members of Kenya's Kikuyu dominated elite. Many were convinced of Jomo Kenyatta's responsibility on the grounds that Mboya presented a threat to his leadership. Njoroge's words of "Why don't you go after the big man?" helped to fuel this.

An alternate theory lays the blame for Mboya's murder on the supporters of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga who it is claimed feared that Mboya's appeal was taking support away from him among the Luo.

The photograph is dated June 4th 1963.
