What They Never Tell You About Modern Libation
What They Never Tell You About Modern Libation Baka Omubo 134 Views • 3 years ago

Does modern libation it really works?
What is the purpose of a libation?
Libations are a form of religious offering or sacrifice, typically made to a god or spirit. They are often performed as part of a religious ceremony or ritual, and can be made with a variety of liquids, including water, wine, milk, or even blood in some cases. The liquid is poured or sprinkled on the ground or on an altar as an offering to the deity or spirit.
The act of pouring a libation is often accompanied by prayers or invocations, and may also include other rituals such as burning incense or making other offerings. The libation itself is symbolic, representing the offering of a part of one's own sustenance to the gods, as well as representing the deity's presence in the ceremony.
Libations were a common practice in many ancient cultures, including those of the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. In ancient Egypt, libations were poured to honor the dead and to invite their spirits to partake of the offering. In ancient Greece and Rome, libations were poured before and after a meal as a way of honoring the gods and giving thanks for the food.
Libations continue to be practiced in some modern religious ceremonies, such as in traditional African religions and certain sects of Hinduism. In these cultures, libations are poured to honor ancestors, to request blessings or protection, or to give thanks for blessings received.
It is important to note that the practice and meaning of libation may vary greatly from one culture or religion to another, so the specific details of the ritual can differ greatly. Libation failure. Libations may fail to work if they are not performed properly or with the appropriate intentions. For example, if the libation is not made with the correct liquid or if it is not poured in the correct manner, the ritual may not be effective. Additionally, if the person performing the libation is not in the correct state of mind, such as if they are not focused or if they do not truly believe in the ritual, the libation may fail to have the desired effect.
Another reason why libation may fail to work is if the person or deity to whom the libation is offered is not propitiated. In other words, if the deity is not in the right mood or if the person is not in good standing with the deity, the libation may not be accepted or may not have the desired effect. This might happen, for example, if the deity is angry or if the person has not fulfilled their obligations or made the necessary preparations before performing the libation.

The environmental disaster fuelled by used clothes and fast fashion | Foreign Correspondent
The environmental disaster fuelled by used clothes and fast fashion | Foreign Correspondent Kwabena Ofori Osei 56 Views • 3 years ago

The dark side of the world’s fashion addiction. Many of our old clothes, donated
to charities, end up in rotting textile mountains in West Africa. This is a story
about how our waste is creating an environmental disaster.

Have you ever thought about what happens to your old clothes after you drop them off at the
op shop? It might be time to start, because these goodwill gestures are helping to fuel an environmental catastrophe on the other side of the world.

When charities in Australia can’t sell donated clothing, tonnes of it ends up being exported to
countries like Ghana, in West Africa. Ship after ship docks every week with bales from Europe,
the US, China and Australia.

They call them ‘Dead White Man’s Clothes’. Once they arrive in Ghana, they’re taken to the
bustling Kantamanto markets in the capital Accra and from here, they make their way to
villages and towns across the country.

The industry provides jobs for thousands of people, like Asare Asamoah, a successful importer.
He brings in clothes, mainly from the United Kingdom, and if they’re good quality, he can make
a decent living.

But it’s risky business. He has to pay upfront for a bale and never knows whether it’s trash or
treasure. With cheap, fast fashion flooding the world, the quality of the clothes arriving in
Ghana is getting worse and worse.

‘Sometimes you’ve gone and bought something, then you don’t get what you want’, says
Asamoah. ‘Then you lose your money.”

And there’s a dark side to this industry.

Correspondent Linton Besser travels to Ghana to uncover the dirty secret behind the world’s
fashion addiction.

While 60 per cent of imported fashion items are reused and resold, 40 per cent are rubbish,
creating an environmental catastrophe for this poor nation.

With the main dumpsite for textile waste now full, unregulated dumpsites ring the city. These
fetid clothes mountains are often set on fire, filling the skies with acrid smoke.

‘It is totally a disservice to us in this part of the world because we have become sort of the
dumping ground for the textile waste that is produced from Europe, from the Americas”, says
Accra’s waste manager, Solomon Noi.

Emmanuel Ajaab imports used clothes from Australia but he despairs at the poor quality of the
clothes that arrive. From a bale of about 200 garments, he finds only seven he can resell at a
good price.

“In Europe and UK and Australia, America, they think Africa here, sorry to say, we are not like a
human being”, he tells Foreign Correspondent.

The dumped textiles also get swept up in the monsoonal rains and end up choking the city’s
waterways and beaches, posing a danger to fishermen and aquatic life. Liz Ricketts, who runs
an NGO campaigning for awareness of Ghana's textile waste crisis, lays the blame at the feet
of international fashion houses.

“Waste is a part of the business model of fashion. A lot of brands overproduce by up to 40 per
cent”, says Ricketts.

Noi begs the people who donate their clothes to think twice about where they end up.

“If they come here, like you've come, and you see the practicality for yourself, then they will
know that, no, we better take care of these things within our country and not to ship that
problem to cause problems to other people.”

Webinar | Structural use of bamboo culms (P2) 17 Nov 2020 Ambakisye-Okang Dukuzumurenyi 15 Views • 5 years ago

Session 3: Structural use of bamboo culms (Part 2)

Speaker: Zhuo Xin, Associate Professor of College of Civil Engineering and Architecture at Zhejiang University

Topic: Innovative multi-culm bamboo spatial lattice structures

The innovative multi-culm bamboo spatial lattice structures are composed of bamboo culm triangle installation units which are connected in the way that all simple connectors are the same. The topological relationship of this structural system differs from that of the traditional spatial lattice structures. A free-form surface lattice structures can be assembled in the way of tangent direction parallel connection between adjoining installation units. The bearing capacity of the structures can be strengthened in the way of normal direction parallel connection between adjoining installation units. The feasibility of this structural system has been validated by engineering applications.

Speaker: Luis Felipe Lopez, Head of Technology at Base Bahay Foundation in the Philippines

Topic: Research in the Philippines

Base Bahay Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing disaster-resilient, sustainable socialised housing for low-income families and disaster victims using the Cement-Bamboo Frame Technology (CBFT). However, though the CBFT has been tried and tested in our various projects around the country, Base remains dedicated to constant research and innovation for the optimization of the technology.

This can be achieved through the Base Innovation Center where Base conducts research on bamboo construction technology, in collaboration with various international and local universities. Together with our partner institutions, the BIC aims to further bamboo technology and promote this for widespread use.

Speaker: David Trujillo, Chair of INBAR Construction Task Force, Assistant Professor at Coventry University

Topic: Making bamboo a mainstream structural material

Bamboo has been used as a construction material for thousands of years and currently hundreds of millions of people live in bamboo housing across the world, yet it is still perceived as non-conventional material. This is because most of bamboo constructions are vernacular. Over the last 20 years a significant effort has been made to transform it into another engineering material. This presentation identifies the state-of-the-art of bamboo engineering, including the significant progress made in the development of standards (and codes) and also identifies the path yet to cover.
