A family of porcupines fighting a leopard in an attempt to save their two young. Who will emerge victorious? “As a guide in the Kruger National Park, I have had the privilege of witnessing some incredible wildlife sightings over the years. However, one particular experience stands out. I was preparing to take a group of guests on a bush walk. We had just left Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp when one of my guests informed me of a leopard that had been seen in the area earlier that morning. With a slight bit of anticipation, we headed in that direction.”

“After searching for a short while. We decided it was best to leave the leopard and instead prepare for our morning walk. I stopped the vehicle on the roadside and informed the guests that it was safe for them to disembark from the vehicle. Whilst I was conducting the pre-trail brief on the safety and procedures of the walk, a deep sound echoed from the culvert that was a few meters from us.”

“On the road in front of me, a porcupine mother emerged from the culvert with two youngsters. They were shortly followed by the male porcupine. Then a leopard! The same leopard we had been searching for that morning had now found us and was in the middle of a hunt. I hurried my guest to the safety of the vehicle and watched on in awe.”

Porcupines are typically mute creatures and are not frequently observed vocalizing. The deep grunt that was audible was a definite warning of danger and a sign that the porcupines were under the stress of some kind.

“At first, I thought the leopard would quickly overpower the porcupines. As I watched the scene unfold, I was in awe of their determination and bravery. The porcupine couple worked together, using their sharp quills as a weapon against the leopard. The leopard tried to pounce, but each time it did, the porcupines would turn their backs and raise their quills. Successfully deterring the leopard from attacking.”

“The parents made sure that the two youngsters were always in the middle and out of reach of the leopard. After a few minutes, the leopard eventually gave up and retreated into the bush. The porcupine family was able to continue on their way, safe and unharmed.”

Moments like these serve as a reminder that we share this beautiful land with a diverse and fascinating array of wildlife. It’s up to us to protect and preserve it for future generations.

Normally, our lifetime is too short to see any major changes. We don’t notice mountains rise, the way rivers change their course, or how oceans are created. Entire valleys may be sinking, but it usually takes too long for them to sink entirely. Still, a group of scientists recently noticed there’s a new ocean being formed really fast and we can even witness it appear. Not far away from the Horn of Africa peninsula, the sixth ocean is being born at the moment! By the way, there's a theory that claims the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans might just cease to exist, forming the new ocean basin. Eurasia will be split to form a new ocean, and all the continents will migrate to merge into the supercontinent. Another possible scenario claims the continents might merge into the uniform landmass, or form a circle with a large sea inside, and the Super Pacific Ocean outside. And since all the continents keep drifting northwards even now, it’s quite probable that almost all of them will meet up somewhere at the North Pole. So, here's how the Earth might change in millions of years.#brightside

Amilcar Cabral and the Liberation Struggle: Education as the Corners for Revolution

Join militant historian Sónia Vaz Borges for a lecture on the revolutionary struggle of the PAIGC and life and legacy of Amilcar Cabral.

“The people of ‘Portuguese’ Guinea took up arms to free their country from colonial domination in 1963, under the leadership of the Partido Africano da Independencia da Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC). Amilcar Cabral, the founder of the PAIGC, saw the necessity of freeing their country from Portuguese colonial domination. The experiences of other liberation movements, the growth of neo-colonialism in the newly ‘independent’ African countries, and above all the development of the movement within Guinea itself made clear the necessity of a true socialist revolution if any real change was to be made.

To revolutionary movements throughout the world, the struggle in Guinea is of prime importance as an outstanding illustration of the need to study one’s own concrete conditions and to make the revolution according to these conditions, rather than relying on the experience of others, valuable as this may be.”

Sónia Vaz Borges is a militant interdisciplinary historian, social and political organizer. She has B.A. in Modern and Contemporary History, Politics and International Affairs from ISCTE -University Institute of Lisbon, and a M.A. in African History from the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Lisbon. She received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Humboldt University of Berlin, and a postdoctoral from the Center for Place, Culture and Politics (CPCP) at the Graduate Center City University of New York. She is also the editor of the booklets Cadernos Consciência e Resistência Negra (2007-2011) and author of the book Na Pó di Spéra. Percursos nos Bairros da Estrada Militar, Santa Filomena e Encosta Nascente (2014). Along with filmmaker Filipa César, Sónia Vaz Borges co-authored the short film Navigating the Pilot School (2016). Sónia Vaz Borges lives in Berlin and is a researcher at the Humboldt University of Berlin, and its currently working on a new project and a second film together with Filipa César.
