In recent months, a clip of Amos Wilson has been doing the rounds as leaders & advocates of the #ADOS hashtag attempt to use his words to justify negative sentiments towards "Black Immigrants" to the USA.

We are all entitled to our Political Ideology. What we are not entitled to do is distort the legacies of our Ancestors. Our Ancestors deserve to be represented by us, for exactly what they stood for. The deliberate distortion of the legacy of our great #PanAfrikan Ancestor is unfortunate... and it must be corrected.

This clip is an attempt to put the legacy of Amos Wilson in proper context for those who may be new to his work.

⁣🌍 AFRICA: ARE WE BUILDING OUR OWN FUTURE, OR WAITING FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO BUILD IT FOR US?
Let me ask you something that might make some people uncomfortable.
Why does a continent blessed with extraordinary natural resources, a young and growing population, rich cultural traditions, and immense human potential still struggle to provide economic security and opportunities for so many of its people?
Is it simply the fault of colonialism?
Is it the failure of our political leaders?
Is it the influence of foreign powers?
Or is the reality far more complicated than we are sometimes willing to admit?
Perhaps the most dangerous thing we can do is blame everyone else without examining ourselves. Equally dangerous is blaming ourselves while pretending that history and global power structures do not matter.
We must be courageous enough to confront both.
🧠 THE CRISIS OF HOW WE SEE OURSELVES
For generations, many Africans have been taught, directly or indirectly, to associate success with leaving the continent.
A young African dreams of becoming an engineer, doctor, scientist, entrepreneur, or researcher. But somewhere along the journey, the dream often becomes incomplete without a ticket to Europe or America.
Why?
Is it because Africa lacks intelligent people? Absolutely not.
Is it because Africans lack creativity? Certainly not.
Or have we built societies in which talent too often struggles to find the institutions, opportunities, infrastructure, and leadership necessary to flourish?
If our most talented young people believe their future lies elsewhere, we must ask what our societies are doing to make staying, returning, investing, and building at home attractive and worthwhile.
Migration is not the enemy. Sometimes it is a necessity, an opportunity, or a pathway to growth.
The real question is this: Why should leaving Africa feel like the only reliable route to a better life for so many people?
📚 WE MUST QUESTION THE EDUCATION WE INHERITED
Are we educating young Africans to solve African problems, or primarily preparing them to compete within systems designed around someone else's priorities?
Do our educational institutions encourage critical thinking, scientific discovery, industrial innovation, and entrepreneurship?
Or do we sometimes reward memorization more than understanding, certificates more than competence, and academic achievement more than the ability to create practical solutions?
Imagine what could happen if African education placed greater emphasis on transforming agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, energy, technology, housing, and local industries.
Imagine a generation that studies the world, learns from its successes and failures, and then applies that knowledge to build stronger African societies.
Education should not merely help us escape poverty individually. It should equip us with the tools to reduce poverty collectively.
💰 THE PARADOX OF AFRICAN WEALTH
How can a continent rich in natural resources have so many communities struggling to access reliable electricity, quality healthcare, decent housing, and well-paying jobs?
We cannot answer that question honestly without examining governance, corruption, taxation, trade, infrastructure, resource ownership, and the historical inequalities that continue to shape the global economy.
But we must also ask ourselves:
What happens when we export raw materials and import expensive finished products?
What happens when we consume more than we produce?
What happens when political loyalty becomes more important than competence?
What happens when we celebrate the discovery of natural resources without asking who ultimately benefits from their extraction?
And what happens when citizens demand accountability from leaders during election campaigns but abandon that responsibility once the elections are over?
Natural resources do not automatically create national wealth. Institutions, knowledge, productive industries, responsible leadership, and fair economic systems help turn resources into prosperity.
Africa must aspire not merely to possess wealth, but to develop the capacity to create, process, protect, and distribute it in ways that improve people's lives.
🔥 THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE QUESTION
Here is where the conversation becomes difficult.
We often speak about the Africa we want: prosperous, united, technologically advanced, economically independent, and respected throughout the world.
But are we prepared to build the habits, institutions, and systems that such a continent requires?
Are we prepared to reject corruption even when we personally benefit from it?
Are we prepared to support competence over ethnicity, party loyalty, personal connections, or short-term political rewards?
Are we prepared to invest in local businesses, demand quality from local producers, protect public resources, and hold powerful people accountable?
Are we willing to cooperate across national borders when our shared interests demand it?
And are we prepared to accept that rebuilding a continent requires more than inspirational speeches, emotional nationalism, and social media debates?
Pan-Africanism cannot remain merely an identity we celebrate. It must become a practical commitment to cooperation, shared development, stronger institutions, and the dignity of African people everywhere.
🌍 THE FUTURE MUST BE MORE THAN A SLOGAN
Africa does not need to isolate itself from the world to become independent.
It needs the capacity to negotiate with the world from a position of greater strength.
It does not need to reject foreign knowledge.
It needs the confidence and capability to learn, adapt, innovate, and create knowledge of its own.
It does not need to discourage its people from travelling abroad.
It needs to build societies where people can leave to learn, return to contribute, or remain abroad while still participating meaningfully in Africa's development.
And it does not need another generation that simply celebrates its potential.
It needs a generation that turns that potential into measurable improvements in people's lives.
The ultimate measure of African progress is not how loudly we proclaim our greatness. It is whether ordinary Africans can live with dignity, access opportunity, develop their talents, and build a future they believe in.
History may explain some of the challenges we face, but history alone cannot design the institutions we need tomorrow.
Our leaders have responsibilities.
Our institutions have responsibilities.
Our international partners have responsibilities.
And as citizens, we have responsibilities too.
The question is whether we are prepared to confront these responsibilities honestly, without excuses, without hatred, and without surrendering our hope.
Because Africa's future should not be a permanent promise made to every new generation.
IT SHOULD BE A REALITY THAT EACH GENERATION HELPS BUILD.
💬 NOW, LET'S HAVE A SERIOUS CONVERSATION.
I want you to answer these questions honestly:
1. Is colonialism still the biggest obstacle to African development, or have failures in post-independence leadership and governance become equally important?
2. Why do so many young Africans associate success with moving to Europe or America, and what would it take to change that mindset without denying the real economic challenges they face?
3. If Africa is to become economically independent, should it prioritize manufacturing, education, agricultural transformation, political reform, or regional integration? Which should come first, and why?
4. Are ordinary citizens part of the problem when they tolerate corruption, tribal favoritism, or political incompetence in exchange for personal benefits?
5. What specific action could African countries take within the next ten years to reduce their dependence on exporting raw materials and importing finished products?
I am not looking for comments that simply say Africa is great or Africa is failing. I want arguments, evidence, solutions, and honest disagreements.
Let's move beyond slogans and start discussing the systems, decisions, and actions that will determine our future.
🌍 THE QUESTION IS NOT WHETHER AFRICA HAS POTENTIAL. THE QUESTION IS WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO WITH IT.

The President of Sri Lanka started pushing to build a new port in a small town at the south end of Sri Lanka because ambitious projects like this make you look like a good, caring politician. The only problem was that everyone, including their own government studies estimated that the port wouldn’t be profitable. But then the President announced that the project had been greenlighted - with help from none other than China.

The port opened in 2012, and the forecasts were right - no one was interested in using this new port. And it’s finances were in the hole. So the President went back to China for another loan, this time for $757 million.So what did they do? They took out another loan from China, this time for $1 billion dollars, to help pay off that upcoming debt payment. It’s safe to say that Sri Lanka found itself at the mercy of the Chinese government. It was drowning in debt payments and was left with an expensive port no one wanted to use. And now, China owns 85% of that port and managed to squeeze 15,000 acres of land around that port as well.

Debt traps, debt diplomacy is nothing new. China is probably just taking a page out of the original master at this game: the US. Why did the US go through all this effort to indebt these Less-Developed Countries, or LDCs? Simple: when you’re a global superpower, you need a lot of resources to stay on top: oil, energy, raw materials, nations under your influence so you can call them up when you need something like votes at the UN, and so on.

Today, China is in a similar position - they’re desperate for energy, money, and resources to continue their astronomical growth to the top.Who knows in the long run what will happen with China's colonialism. China has the ability to be forceful when needed, especially in their sphere. History would say China will follow the old model, but things have radically changed before. China is making mistakes but continues to sell these projects.
