What happens when a country finally decides it’s tired of playing dress-up in someone else’s clothes? Burkina Faso just threw a massive wrench in the whole colonial hangover; ditching the ridiculous wigs and gowns that have been clinging to the country’s legal system like a bad fashion trend. But this isn’t about fashion, is it? No, it’s about power, pride, and throwing colonialism out the door. Imagine for a second; what if your whole legal system was dressed in the same outfits used by the people who once ruled over you?
Feels ridiculous, right? Well, that's exactly what Burkina Faso just dumped. But here’s the thing: this decision isn’t just about style. It's about Africa finally saying, “We’re done with this nonsense.” It’s a powerful rejection of the colonial mindset that’s been ingrained into the African psyche for far too long. But what does it mean?
Let’s find out.

Black Manhood in the Diaspora - Amos N. Wilson, PhD

In this episode of Back to Africa, I share my shocking experience in Namibia, a country with a deep and painful history of colonization. During my visit, I stayed on a massive 43,000-hectare farm owned by a single German family which purchased the land from descendants of German settlers, who stole the land from the Herero and Nama people. This stark inequality left me outraged and compelled me to dive deeper into Namibia’s colonial past.I explore the horrific role of Lothar von Trotha, the German military officer responsible for orchestrating the Herero and Nama genocide—the first genocide of the 20th century. Through conversations with Germans living in Namibia, I was confronted with a troubling denial of this dark history, raising the question of accountability and reconciliation. This episode sheds light on how Germany has handled—or failed to handle—this chapter of its colonial past. Despite recent attempts at reparations, I question whether the nation has truly learned from history. By examining the effects of land theft and colonial injustice, I invite you to join me in reflecting on what justice and accountability should look like in post-colonial Africa. Watch, learn, and engage with this critical discussion.

AHSA hosted its 52nd annual conference in July-Aug, 2021 and was a partner for PANAFEST Three (3) day Colloquium 2021 in Ghana. The Pan African Festival (PANAFEST) Foundation, AHSA and University of Cape Coast met virtually and on ground to explore issues affecting the Black Family, Youth, Pan Africanism and African liberation. This session will highlight the intergenerational transmission of mission and purpose to advance Africana/Kemetic studies and how it can be used to develop leadership and sustain our people. AHSA highlights Atlantis Browder as a model youth central to AHSA’s future and teaching other youths the significance of cultural work and the intergenerational learning and teaching of ancient Kemetic historical knowledge for liberation.

China has brought over 700 million people out of poverty through economic development. But over 100 million people remained intractably poor, trapped in poverty due to isolation, low education, and infirmities. After gathering and organizing materials for half a year, the American-Chinese co-production team of "China's Poverty Alleviation at the Grassroots" immersed themselves into the local lives of China's rural poor in remote mountainous areas. With "targeted poverty alleviation" being the main topic, five simple but touching stories personalize the process and depict the measures of combating poverty.

After taking you on a journey through geologic time, we've arrived at the Cenozoic Era. Most of the mammals and birds that you can think of appeared during this era but perhaps more importantly, the Cenozoic marks the rise of organisms that look a lot like us.

The bridge crosses over a busy freeway in Kenya's capital, Nairobi. If you're looking for vegetables, a bowl of hot soup, a haircut, or even a new bed, you can find it here. But now, the bridge is to be torn down. The bridge provides a vital link between the slum district of Kangemi and more prosperous parts of the city. ARD's Nairobi bureau chief, Sabine Bohland, first reported in 2015 on the thriving commerce that takes place on the bridge. She interviewed three people: Mogaka, who makes and sells soup; Jacky, who sells vegetables; and Saidi, a student. All three talked about their dreams for the future. Five years later, Bohland returned to the bridge to find out how these people are coping with the coronavirus pandemic, and whether they've made their dreams come true.
