⁣A commission of inquiry into the policies of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank that have entrenched Africa’s debt crisis, undermined public services, and driven inequality.

Our full interview with filmmaker and educator Haile Gerima from 2015. A 4K restoration of SANKOFA was just released on Netflix via ARRAY.

----
Haile Gerima is an independent filmmaker and professor of film at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Born and raised in Ethiopia, Gerima emigrated to the United States in 1967. Following in the footsteps of his father, a dramatist and playwright, Gerima studied acting in Chicago before entering the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, where his exposure to Latin American films inspired him to mine his own cultural legacy. After completing his thesis film, Bush Mama (1975), Gerima received international acclaim with Harvest: 3000 Years (1976), an Ethiopian drama that won the Grand Prize at the Locarno film festival.

After the award-winning Ashes & Embers (1982) and the documentaries Wilmington 10—U.S.A 10,000 (1978) and After Winter: Sterling Brown (1985), Gerima filmed his epic, Sankofa (1993). This formally ambitious tale of a plantation slave revolt was ignored by U.S. distributors, but Gerima tapped into African American communities, and booked sold-out screenings in independent theaters around the country.

In 1996, Gerima founded the Sankofa Video and Bookstore in Washington, DC., a cultural and intellectual space that offers opportunities for self-expression, interaction, discussion and analysis through community events such as film screenings, book signings, scholar forums and artist showcases. Gerima continues to distribute and promote his own films, including his most recent festival success, Teza (2008), which won the Jury and Best Screenplay awards at the Venice Film Festival. He also lectures and conducts workshops in alternative screenwriting and directing both within the U.S. and internationally.

#NEW year, #Testimonials
Celebrating 6259 NEW YEAR Celebrations in Africa, Zimbabwe Nyaje Gokwe! Since earliest times, melanin dominant people (MDH) have sought to fulfil inherent deeply-rooted spiritual urge that links the to natural time cycles. They achieved this by engaging in electric and spirit filled New Year festivals. Everything was considered to start anew, untainted and original, as long as certain rituals were performed individually, as families, tribes, or in their specific kingdom. First, the celebrants would banish malicious spirits, any evils or sins of the past year or years, through specific cleansing processes. This would be followed by positive acts that would guarantee a propitious future. It was rare for mature adult participants to be unaware of the value of adhering seriously to these ancient mystical practices. However today billions of MDH toot their car horns and stay awake on December 31 ignorant of the certainty that this type of New Year even with decent horns blaring and awesome fireworks is being used as s tool to arouse evil spirits. They are ushering in a New Year that is not theirs but the roman deity Janus. Why Should we consciously celebrate New year in September? Because its our NEW YEAR, the beginning of a new life when leaves begin to change and Summer is upon us. Time to plant. Time to review what has happened in the last years and make necessary adjustments. It is also a Celestial calendar, a historic time reckoning system connected to us from our ancestor 4236-4241 Before Common Era. Which is over 6000 years ago. SUBSCRIBE Share and Enjoy...
