AHSA hosted its 52nd annual conference in July-Aug, 2021 and was a partner for PANAFEST and the 2021 PANAFEST Three (3) day Colloquium in Ghana. The Pan African Festival (PANAFEST) Foundation, AHSA and University of Cape Coast met virtually and on ground to explore issues affecting the Black Family, Youth, Pan Africanism and African liberation. This video captures a keynote discussion on the significance and legacy of historian, Pan Africanist and Jegna Dr. John Henrik Clarke. His importance in shaping African history, identity, culture knowledge production are highlighted and leader in institutional building, including that of the African Heritage Studies Association (AHSA). Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a global challenge, becoming acute in the face of climate change, natural resource degradation, and diseases affecting humans, animals and plants. Technologies and practices that promote sustainable intensification on smallholder farms vary spatially according to the diverse ways in which economic transformation and population dynamics are influencing the costs of land, farm labor, and cash inputs such as fertilizers and improved seeds. At this seminar we reflect on how to achieve sustainable productivity gains through investments in soil health and knowledge. Reports have been commissioned on pioneering efforts in East and Southern Africa to engage and empower farmers and communities through approaches that specifically support disadvantaged youth and women. Highlights include innovations in extension, soil health monitoring and agricultural policy around sustainable intensification. Firsthand experiences were shared on how to scale out bidirectional learning and access to inputs, to address food security, and simultaneously, environmental security. A panel of experts reflected on the frontline experiences presented, and considered how sustainable agriculture intensification can be further supported and scaled out, in a rapidly changing world. This was a unique opportunity for lessons to be synthesized from cutting-edge innovations in soil health for SDG.

Unreported World investigates how one influential preacher in Kenya could have led hundreds of men, women and children to their deaths. Symeon Brown tracks down the survivors and the families searching for loved ones to find out if this was mass suicide, or mass murder.

So far 429 bodies have been exhumed from graves in Shakahola forest where Pastor Paul Mackenzie’s followers are believed to have starved to death. The leader of the so-called death cult is said to have promised his followers protection from the 'coming apocalypse'. Mackenzie denies any wrongdoing.

Meanwhile another church, Rainbow Ministries, is facing a crackdown for cult-like behaviour. But where is the line between faith and extremism?

The 14 Countries Still Under French Grip

African leaders often face accusations of corruption and perceived alignment with Western interests, which can be attributed to a compelling reason. These leaders find themselves in a delicate position, driven by concerns about their personal safety and the stability of their nations. Their actions, seeking powerful nations' support, stem from a desire for protection against the risk of coups or threats.

However, this quest for security sometimes comes at a cost. Western powers, in exchange for backing, may expect these leaders to prioritize external interests over serving their own people or their nation's best interests. Former French President Jacques Chirac's declaration in March 2008 rings with a sobering truth: "France's significance could diminish to that of a third-tier power without Africa."

Chirac's predecessor, François Mitterand, foresaw this perspective as far back as 1957 when he prophesied, "The absence of Africa could render France's historical narrative incomplete in the 21st century."

Under a binding colonial pact enforced by France, 14 African nations find themselves compelled to deposit a staggering 50% of their foreign reserves into the French central bank, all under the control of the French Minister of Finance. Astonishingly, as of 2014, Togo and approximately 13 other African countries continue to shoulder the burden of colonial debt payments to France. The repercussions of dissent are grim; leaders who dare to resist face dire consequences, often falling victim to assassination or facing destabilizing coups.

In a troubling twist, those who comply with France's demands are rewarded with a luxurious lifestyle, supported by the French government. This stark contrast paints a harrowing picture of disparity, as the people of these nations grapple with extreme poverty and despair. The weight of this reality underscores the profound imbalance in the relationship between these African nations and France, raising crucial questions about sovereignty, economic justice, and the future of these countries as they strive for genuine progress and empowerment Let us take a closer look at these 14 African countries

Presenter is Professor Manu Ampim:Prof. Manu Ampim is the director of Advancing The Research and is a noted historian and scholar specializing in Africana Studies. He has conducted primary (first-hand) research in nearly two dozen countries over the past 30 years, and is the author of numerous scholarly articles and several books, including his latest work, A History of African Civilizations (2019). Prof. Ampim is also a tenured professor at Contra Costa College (San Pablo, CA) and Chair of the History, Anthropology, and Geography Department.
