Where do we get our mathematical symbols from? Why is the set of integers called ℤ ? When was the equals sign first used? How about zero? Good notation tends to catch on quickly, whereas bad notation can obscure beautiful theory.

The lecture explores how the introduction of new notation has paved the way for new leaps in understanding, and considers some mathematical quirks of language, such as what the number 4 in English has in common with the number 11 in Russian.

A lecture by Sarah Hart

The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:

Millions of tons of annual agricultural trade is now being conducted outside the US dollar, and within the new BRICS framework.

This represents a tectonic shift in global finance, as the dominant trading hubs of New York, Chicago, and London are replaced by a multipolar system of bilateral trades using national currencies and non-USD-denominated pricing and contracts.

The already huge volumes of trade in ag, energy, and raw materials are destroying price discovery in global markets. Decisionmakers and executives in Western companies are unable to see markets, nor can they know what parties are driving demand, nor which suppliers are emerging to meet that demand. Our senior-level business managers and planners are flying blind, and only after realizing giant losses we learn that we are now suppliers only of last resort: the BRICS countries and their allied countries across the world are producing and trading at prices far below our cost of production.

In other news, remember the adorable 5-year-old kid chef Ama Kambon? You may remember her from her videos and morning show appearances where she made child-friendly meals for kids?

Well, now she's a teenager, taking on a significant project to introduce healthy food options for both kids and adults. She is hosting a healthy food-tasting dinner. And she's not going it alone. Some big names and organizations are backing her. We heard Okyeame Kwame, Kweku Andoh Baffour, and others confirmed to attend, along with media personalities like Amenyaw Debra, Kojo Pooley, and Bishop Agbey Jr. III, who also confirmed. Others invited but not yet confirmed are Ambolley and notable vegan stars in Ghana. Additionally, Nature's Therapy, a popular soap brand, and others are coming in as sponsors.

The community is really showing up for themselves, Chef Ama, and the youth.

But this isn't child's play. The admission price is definitely adult-sized.

Chef Ama said it's all for a good cause, though.

She received grants and sponsorship for activities scheduled for late 2024. The proceeds will help her organize the free vegan health festival and launch a youth entrepreneur program. She intends to help other children pursue their passions and launch a program where youth can follow in her footsteps and start businesses while they are young.

If you want to learn more about Chef Ama Kambon, support her, or attend her upcoming events, visit NkwaDua.com or find her everywhere nkwadua vegan.

And coming up next ....

This is a journey form the smallest manmade hole - by removing just one single atom - to the edge of the universe. Man has finally succeeded in making the ancient dream of Greek philosophers come true - to «see» an atom. In another direction we also seem to have unlimited sight: the «Hubble Telescope» grants us a glimpse of the remotest galaxies. This documentary assesses the limits of human perception, taking us on a journey through time from the quasars, millions of light-years away from earth, via the wonders of our populated world to the depths of human genotype and the structure of a single atom. «Limits of Perception» promises a filmic journey of exploration from micro- into macrocosm.
