In 1959, Martin Luther King Jr was known chiefly for his role in the successful Montgomery bus boycott. It was years before his "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington. Long thought lost, the interview was found and rebroadcast in 2009. In it, King sat down for his KTCA interview with L. Howard Bennett, a civil rights leader and the first African-American judge in Minnesota.

Quantum gravity is the holy grail for modern theoretical physicists – a single structure that brings together the two great theories of the 20th century: quantum mechanics and general relativity. One widely-known solution is string theory, which emerged from particle physics. In this talk, Jim Baggott will describe the other approach known as Loop Quantum Gravity. This theory starts from general relativity, borrows many ideas and techniques from quantum mechanics, and predicts that space itself is quantum in nature.

Jim Baggott is an award-winning science writer. He trained as a scientist, completing a doctorate in chemical physics at the University of Oxford in the early 80s, before embarking on post-doctoral research studies at Oxford and at Stanford University in California.

The continent of Africa has had it’s fair share of mercenaries who are hired by different parties to help with either effecting regime change or for purposes of protecting countries from insurgent forces.

One of the most popular of these was a man called Bob Denard who became legendary for his role in attempting to overthrow regimes in a series of wars that accompanied the decolonisation of Africa, during the 1960s and 1970s

Claiming to have support from France for operations meant to retain French influence in its former colonies, Bob called himself the “Pirate of the Republic” in a career which began in Congo and ended in the Comoros islands.

Bob Denard was involved in four of the 19 coup attempts that have shaken the Comoros archipelago since the islands won independence from France in 1975. At one point he was considered as the de facto leader of the Comoros.

Many Comorians blamed him for destabilising the islands, as well as other parts of Africa.
In this episode of African Biographics, we look at the illustrious career of Robert Denard, a career mercenary who played a part in charting the course of history in a few African countries.

Oliver Laurence North (born October 7, 1943) is an American political commentator, television host, military historian, author, and retired United States Marine Corps lieutenant colonel. He was convicted in the Iran–Contra affair of the late 1980s, but his convictions were vacated and reversed, and all charges against him dismissed in 1991.

North is primarily remembered for his term as a National Security Council staff member during the Iran-Contra affair, a political scandal of the late 1980s. The scandal involved the illegal sale of weapons to Iran to encourage the release of U.S. hostages then held in Lebanon. North formulated the second part of the plan, which was to divert proceeds from the arms sales to support the Contra rebel groups in Nicaragua, which had been specifically prohibited under the Boland Amendment. North was granted limited immunity from prosecution in exchange for testifying before Congress about the scheme.

The ⁣CIA-backed Contras were filling their coffers by collaborating with drug traffickers then flooding U.S. borders with cocaine from South America that was funneled into the Black community to continue US government repression of political dissent, agitation and revolutionary activities.

www.bittermedicineblogs.com – A recent New York Times article, “Working to Close the Breast Feeding Gap” totally surprised us! In it, the article says that Black women are not encouraged to nurse as much as white women, due to the history of their own mothers not breast feeding them.

Shockingly, Black newborns are nine times more likely than white babies to get formula in hospitals. Initially, white women led the charge to raise their children on baby formula, and Black women followed suit. However, at some point white women ditched baby formula, realizing “breast is best”, but Black women did not follow. It should be noted: White women leading the charge towards feeding babies with baby formula is rooted in Slavery.

Many Black women today shun breast feeding because it reminds them of days gone by, during slavery, when Black women were forced to not only work the fields, but also be wet nurses to white families.

We examine the reasons why there isn’t more lactation assistance in our community; Black women’s traumatic history with being wet nurses to their oppressor’s children; the pros and cons of breast feeding from both a scientific and metaphysical stance; and we relate all of this to why white supremacy discourages breast feeding in the Black community.

Harvard University released a 134-page report this week that detailed the school’s extensive ties to slavery and pledged $100 million for a fund for scholars to continue to research the topic. The report documents dozens of prominent people associated with Harvard who enslaved people, including four Harvard presidents. Harvard commissioned the study in 2019 as part of a wave of schools reckoning with their pasts and the ongoing legacy of racial discrimination. “Harvard’s ties to slavery begin with the founding of the institution,” says MIT historian Craig Steven Wilder, author of “Ebony & Ivy: Race, Slavery, and the Troubled History of America’s Universities.” Wilder says that while this history is not new, Harvard worked for decades to erase its complicity in slavery. “We’re really only beginning to reconcile and to really struggle with the deep ties that this institution has to slavery,” he says.
